{"id":824248,"date":"2026-05-26T23:26:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T23:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/824248\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T23:26:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T23:26:17","slug":"librarians-kids-throw-the-book-at-mamdani-over-broken-funding-promise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/824248\/","title":{"rendered":"Librarians, Kids Throw the Book at Mamdani Over Broken Funding Promise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a candidate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/category\/zohran-mamdani\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a> promised to fund the city\u2019s three library systems with half of 1% of the city\u2019s budget, vowing to end the usual budget dance and financial uncertainty that put libraries at the middle of tense negotiations with the City Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as mayor, Mamdani\u2019s executive budget proposal coughs up just .42% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2026\/05\/12\/as-mamdani-pulls-budget-rabbit-from-hat-watchdogs-fret-over-one-shots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the budget<\/a> \u2014 less than his predecessor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/category\/eric-adams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Adams<\/a> had budgeted \u2014 and advocates young and old say the annual budget cha cha is still playing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the NYC Public Library Action Network, or NYC PLAN, rallied Tuesday on City Hall\u2019s steps ahead of an executive budget hearing on the libraries. The organization is made up of library workers and others pushing for more money for the Queens, New York, and Brooklyn public library systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe demand that you keep the promise that you made,\u201d Anastazia Neely, a librarian at the New York Public Library\u2019s Countee Cullen branch in Harlem, said at the rally. She and others say libraries would receive an additional $97 million with the 0.5% Mamdani promised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe demand 50 cents of every $100 for libraries \u2014 not by the end of your mayoral term, not at some date in the future, not in the next cycle, but right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2026\/05\/12\/124-billion-mamdani-budget-leaves-city-reserves-intact\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">executive budget proposal<\/a>, libraries receive 42 cents for every $100 in the city budget. That\u2019s less than the current budget set by Mayor Adams, which gives libraries 45 cents for every $100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you let him out swag you on this, we will never hear the end of it,\u201d Neely said of the former mayor. \u201cWe demand those eight cents.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lauren Comito, co-founder of Urban Librarians Unite, said she believed Mamdani when he said he would end what\u2019s known as the \u201cbudget dance\u201d of cuts and restorations during the budget process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a hard time saying how heartbroken I am, that I believed the promise, that after 26 years of cuts and fighting, that I believed it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesman for the mayor did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mamdani released his executive budget earlier this month, and he held an event at a Brooklyn library to celebrate the $31.7 million he added to the budget for the three systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that fell short of his promise of 0.5% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/tag\/budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$124 billion budget<\/a> \u2014 a goal he said will still be met, someday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI absolutely think that there will be a point at which we get there, because it\u2019s a goal that I continue to believe in, and it\u2019s one that I\u2019ve said that we will accomplish by the time that I\u2019m done being the mayor of the city,\u201d Mamdani said, although he didn\u2019t commit to a specific year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heads of the three library systems all testified at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/category\/city-council\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City Council<\/a> on Tuesday, cautiously hopeful for money for staff, programs, and maintenance while also thanking the mayor and Council for their support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dennis Walcott, the president and CEO of Queens Public Library, said their unmet need is in the tens of millions of dollars, including operating and capital funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe face escalating costs, such as contractual and insurance premiums, supply and maintenance needs, inflationary pressures, and unexpected expenses,\u201d he said. Circulation at the Queens libraries rose 25% last year, and they need money for new print books and e-materials, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tony Marx, the head of the New York Public Library, said that between July 1, 2025 and the current year, his branches had lost 182 hours of service due to emergency repairs and maintenance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith more funds in our emergency repairs budget, we can limit these losses to provide more consistent, reliable service,\u201d he said, also citing increased demand and costs of both physical and e-books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their plea for more funding in the Council aligned with that of half a dozen kids who patiently waited for their chance to speak at the rally earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/051526_mamdani_library_funding-5.jpg\" alt=\"Mayor Zohran Mamdani speaks at the Ditmas Park public library about restoring funding for branches across the city,\" class=\"wp-image-77580\"  \/>Mayor Zohran Mamdani speaks at the Ditmas Park public library about restoring funding for branches across the city, May 15, 2026.
