\n\tStephen Colbert<\/a> got an assist from some of his late-night rivals and other celebs for a send-up of the viral Coldplay kiss-cam video following CBS\u2019s sudden decision to axe \u201cThe Late Show.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tColbert set up the bit this way: \u201cSome people see this show going away as a sign of something truly dire\u2026 We here at \u2018The Late Show\u2019 never saw our job as changing anything other than how you felt at the end of the day\u2026 Or rather, changing how you felt the next morning, when you watched on your phone, which is why broadcast TV is dying \u2014 you\u2019re part of the problem, look in the mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPoint is, I don\u2019t want this show to be associated with making you sad or anxious,\u201d Colbert continued. \u201cSo I thought: music, OK? That makes people happy, right? So instead of me talking, here with a song to cheer you up are two musical greats\u201d \u2014 whereupon he introduced \u201cWeird Al\u201d Yankovic and Lin-Manuel Miranda.<\/p>\n

\n\tYankovic and Miranda launched into a rendition of Coldplay\u2019s \u201cViva la Vida,\u201d and Miranda immediately directed the camera operators to get shots of the audience, meant to evoke the social-media viral moment that the CEO and HR chief of tech start-up Astronomer were caught cuddling on the jumbotron at a Coldplay concert<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201ccouples\u201d spotted by the \u201cLate Show\u201d audience cam were: Jimmy Fallon<\/a> and Seth Meyers<\/a> of NBC; CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper and Bravo\u2019s Andy Cohen (who have hosted a New Year\u2019s Eve countdown show on CNN the past few years); Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald (\u201cHacks\u201d); and John Oliver<\/a> of HBO\u2019s \u201cLast Week Tonight\u201d and Jon Stewart<\/a> of Comedy Central\u2019s \u201cThe Daily Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert then interrupted Yankovic and Miranda. \u201cI just got this note from corporate,\u201d he told them. \u201cYour song has been canceled. It says here, \u2018This is a purely financial decision,\u201d with Colbert saying that since they began singing the song \u201cthe network has lost, and I don\u2019t know how this is possible, $40 million to $50 million.\u201d That\u2019s a joke about the reported annual losses of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d that led CBS to pull the plug on the late-night mainstay.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his opening monologue on \u201cThe Late Show\u201d Monday, Colbert hit back at President Trump\u2019s gleeful comment last week that \u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired\u201d \u2014 with the host telling the president, \u201cGo fuck yourself\u201d<\/a> (with the f-word censored).<\/p>\n

\n\tFallon, Meyers and Oliver have each previously expressed shock and dismay<\/a> over CBS\u2019s decision to kill \u201cThe Late Show.\u201d Meanwhile, L.A.-based Jimmy Kimmel of ABC wrote \u201cLove you Stephen\u201d and \u201cFuck you and all your Sheldons CBS\u201d<\/a> in an Instagram post last week.<\/p>\n

\n\tStewart, on Monday\u2019s episode of \u201cThe Daily Show,\u201d<\/a> was also in a profanity-laced frame of mind, but his invective was mainly aimed at CBS and parent company Paramount (and other media companies who think \u201cbending the knee to Trump\u201d will save them). After introducing a gospel choir, Stewart sang that \u201cif you\u2019re afraid and you protect your bottom line, I got but one thing to say! Go fuck yourself!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMany critics have said CBS\u2019s cancellation of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d appears politically motived. The announcement came two weeks after Paramount Global, CBS\u2019s parent, disclosed a $16 million payment to Trump to settle his lawsuit alleging \u201c60 Minutes\u201d had deceptively edited an interview with Kamala Harris \u2014 and three days after Colbert blasted the settlement as \u201ca big fat bribe\u201d to try to win Trump administration approval for Paramount\u2019s merger with Skydance Media. The WGA has\u00a0called for\u00a0the New York State attorney general to investigate \u201cThe Late Show\u2019s\u201d cancellation<\/a>, saying it had \u201csignificant concerns\u201d that\u00a0it was \u201ca bribe\u201d to \u201ccurry favor with the Trump Administration as the company looks for merger approval.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCBS has insisted the decision to end \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d which will end its 11-season run in May 2026, was a \u201cpurely\u201d financial one. The network is not planning to relaunch the late-night show with another host (and Colbert joked that the Ed Sullivan Theater would be converted to a self-storage facility).
