{"id":826647,"date":"2026-05-28T00:34:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T00:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/826647\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T00:34:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T00:34:14","slug":"mayor-parker-changes-her-plan-to-fund-homeless-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/826647\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Parker changes her plan to fund homeless services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced a big change to her proposal for a hotel tax increase to fund homeless services.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The mayor previously proposed a 2% increase to the hotel tax to fund her goal of eliminating street homelessness. That would have brought the tax to 17.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association president Ed Grose said weeks of negotiations followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter meetings with every City Council member, my members decided the most prudent course of action was to make a deal with the mayor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The new proposal is for a 0.6% increase, plus a 6% tax increase on short-term rentals. <\/p>\n<p>Council president Kenyatta Johnson said it\u2019s a move in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve made some progress, but we\u2019ll still review it as members of City Council. It just came out today, so I still want to get feedback from my members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The tax would need state approval. The head of the Philadelphia delegation to Harrisburg, Morgan Cephas, said she\u2019s working toward consensus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make sure that we are lockstep together with an ask,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The new proposal would raise 15-Million.
