Around 40 percent of Germans ages 18 to 29 do not know that six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis, while more than one in 10 said they had never heard of the Holocaust, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.claimscon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Claims-Conference-Research-Insights-01.09.25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to a survey<\/a> published last year by the Jewish Claims Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians in the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) \u2014 the country\u2019s most popular political party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/europe-poll-of-polls\/germany\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in recent polls<\/a> \u2014 have at times decried Germany\u2019s culture of remembrance, with extreme-right figures railing against what they call the country\u2019s \u201cguilt cult.\u201d The AfD is particularly strong in the former East Germany, including in the state of Saxony, where a branch of the Yad Vashem center is planned in the city of Leipzig.<\/p>\n<p>In the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD aims to gain real political power for the first time since its founding in a regional vote set for September, <a href=\"https:\/\/afd-regierungsprogramm.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the party\u2019s platform<\/a> calls for commemorating German soldiers who died in World Wars I and II as \u201ca first sign of the patriotic shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Kretschmer, the conservative state premier of Saxony, welcomed plans for the Yad Vashem branch in his state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeipzig can also serve as a bridge to Eastern Europe \u2014 including in cooperation with Poland and the Czech Republic on educational and remembrance initiatives,\u201d said Kretschmer. \u201cEducation and new educational venues are necessary and important for decisively and clearly countering antisemitism, prejudice, disinformation, and any form of Holocaust denial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antisemitic crimes in Germany reached a record in 2024, with 6,236 recorded offenses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmi.bund.de\/SharedDocs\/pressemitteilungen\/DE\/2025\/05\/pmk2024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to statistics released<\/a> by the interior ministry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As the number of firsthand Holocaust witnesses dwindles, studies show that Holocaust awareness among young Germans is declining.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":828052,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[2],"tags":[12648,17749,102000,407,8704,117,472,14446,99,339957,50,11108],"class_list":["post-828051","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","tag-antisemitism","tag-cities","tag-disinformation","tag-education","tag-far-right","tag-germany","tag-history","tag-holocaust","tag-israel","tag-michael-kretschmer","tag-news","tag-youth"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/116652921694649663","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/828051","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=828051"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/828051\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/828052"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=828051"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=828051"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=828051"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
