1.\u00a0California Democrats shrug at their choices in packed race to replace Newsom<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n The crowded race for California governor still has no clear front-runner with only days left for voters to decide which two candidates to advance to the general election in November. Fewer Democrats are voting early so far this year than usual.<\/p>\n Some Democratic voters say they aren’t impressed with the field, while others say they’re fearful of two Republican candidates advancing and locking out Democrats. That’s possible because the state’s primary system allows the top two vote-getters to advance regardless of party.<\/p>\n But it became less likely after one of the major Democrats dropped out and President Donald Trump endorsed one of the leading Republicans.<\/p>\n 2.\u00a0Gov. Newsom endorses LA mayor Bass for reelection<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n Gov. Gavin Newsom Thursday endorsed incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in her bid for reelection, citing their partnership in reducing homelessness, enacting policies to lower crime and bringing back film production to the city.<\/p>\n Newsom’s endorsement comes five days before Tuesday’s primary election, and a tight race between the top three candidates: Bass, City Councilwoman Nithya Raman and former TV reality star Spencer Pratt.<\/p>\n “The work Karen Bass is doing in Los Angeles is making our entire state stronger, with an 18% decline in homelessness while it grew nationally, historic drops in violent crime, boosting film production in L.A. and protecting our communities against ICE. She has my full support for re- election,” Newsom said in a statement.<\/p>\n Bass thanked the governor for his support.<\/p>\n 3.\u00a0Trump review that could shutter Mexican consulates stokes worries<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n The Trump administration’s review of Mexico’s 53 U.S. consulates has stoked worries among Mexicans in the U.S. that some could be shuttered, making it harder for them to access important services.<\/p>\n The consulates help Mexican citizens register births, obtain passports and, increasingly since President Donald Trump’s second term began, access legal aid for loved ones who have fallen afoul of his immigration policies.<\/p>\n The U.S. State Department hasn\u2019t said why it launched the review, but it is happening against the backdrop of the immigration crackdown, some thorny bilateral issues and even theories floated by far-right figures that the consulates have been interfering in U.S. politics \u2014 a claim Mexican leaders strongly deny.<\/p>\n People line up for services at the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, May 8, 2021.
