The updated boardwalk helps protect these cultural resources while making the area more accessible, according to a Facebook post from the park. Benches and a shaded structure will also be installed soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work began to repair the walkway, replacing old wood with new planks, on Oct. 27, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in North Kona, less than five miles south of the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Kaloko-Honok\u014dhau was once a fishing village for the ancient Hawaiians, where they caught and farmed fish. The petroglyphs are carved in old lava flows that extend toward the coastline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bigislandnow.com\/file\/bigislandnow\/2024\/05\/Kaloko-Honokohau-National-Park-day-file-photo-2.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Kaloko-Honokohau-National-Park-day-file-photo-2-1024x643.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-373487\"\/><\/a>Big Island Now file photo of Kaloko-Honok\u014dhau National Historical Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established as a national historical park in 1978, the 1,200-acre park protects the coastal portions of five different ahupua\u2018a (traditional Hawaiian land divisions extending from the mountains into the sea), and a great concentration and variety of tangible and intangible resources that attest to the Hawaiians\u2019 presence on the land, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/kaho\/learn\/historyculture\/index.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the National Park Service website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the park\u2019s diverse resources are loko i\u2018a (two fishponds and a fishtrap that were used for food production), kahua (house site platforms), ki\u2018i p\u014dhaku (petroglyphs), heiau (temples), graves, and a network of historic trails.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"May 28, 2026, 8:00 AM HST New boardwalk at Kaloko-Honok\u014dhau National Historical Park.
