Let\u2019s be friends. <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/newsletter-signup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Billy Penn newsletter today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of Philadelphia cyclists joined the 22nd annual Philly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rideofsilence.org\/main.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ride of Silence on Wednesday<\/a>, paying tribute to the 13 cyclists in the Delaware Valley region killed by motor vehicles over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope that you, as cyclists pedaling silently through the streets of Philadelphia, convey our message, \u2018No more bicycle deaths,\u2019\u201d organizer Ray Scheinfeld said before the group embarked on the ride.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC09664-ed-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-224475\"  \/>Ray Scheinfeld (left) and John Siemiarowski, co-organizers of the 22nd annual Ride of Silence, speak outside Philadelphia City Hall. (Nick Kariuki\/Billy Penn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ride, co-organized by Scheinfeld, John Siemiarowski and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclecoalition.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia<\/a> was postponed from the week before due to unsafe weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It began outside of City Hall and finished in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where everyone lifted their bicycles in unison. The Philadelphia Police Department escorted the group and helped organizers block traffic at many intersections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the ride, Scheinfeld read out the names of all 13 victims, including the ones that have yet to be identified. He described the incidents that killed them and listed the loved ones they\u2019ve left behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list was as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0Andrew Dormer, 61,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/northpennnow.com\/news\/public-safety\/bicyclist-killed-by-car-in-upper-gwynedd-identified-by-coroner-cause-of-death-determined\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who died after he was hit near the Manayunk Bridge Trailhead<\/a>\u00a0on June 5.<\/li>\n<li>John Stone, 55,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/northpennnow.com\/news\/public-safety\/bicyclist-killed-by-car-in-upper-gwynedd-identified-by-coroner-cause-of-death-determined\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed in Upper Gwynedd Township<\/a>, Montgomery County on June 25.<\/li>\n<li>Jerald \u201cJerry\u201d Matt, 60,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclecoalition.org\/popular-dentist-killed-by-a-driver-at-a-schuylkill-river-trail-road-crossing-in-norristown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed on August 11 on the Schuylkill River Trail<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Harry Fenton, 67,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-bike-safety-rally-fairmount-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed on September 2 in Fairmount Park<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>An unidentified male cyclist, 26,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclecoalition.org\/two-bicyclists-killed-in-separate-incidents-in-philadelphia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed in North Philadelphia on September 7<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>An unidentified male cyclist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/deadly-crash-bike-route-130-cinnaminson-new-jersey\/4291550\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed in Cinnaminson, N.J. on October 25<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>An unidentified male cyclist, 39,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/crash-bicycle-washington-township-new-jersey-thursday\/4298589\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed on November 6 in Glassboro, Gloucester County, N.J.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Eduard \u201cTeddy\u201d Einstein, 38,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/teen-driver-to-be-charged-in-death-of-swarthmore-professor\/4397084\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who was killed in Upper Darby on December 3<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Hector \u201cJune\u201d Rodriguez, 54,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/teen-charged-in-hit-and-run-crash-that-killed-philly-dj\/4336059\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed in West Philly on December 20<\/a>, riding home from working his D.J. shift at Bob &amp; Barbara\u2019s Lounge on South Street.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Anthony Caprio III, 49,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclecoalition.org\/anthony-caprio-was-struck-and-killed-by-a-hit-and-run-in-mount-laurel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed on December 29 in Mount Laurel, N.J.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Luis A. Colon, 60,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclecoalition.org\/luis-colon-killed-after-being-struck-by-two-drivers-in-gloucester-county\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who was killed on March 30 in Deptford Township, N.J.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Susan White-Scalia, 61,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgeecelebration.com\/obituaries\/susan-white\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who was killed in Hadden Township, N.J. on April 1.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Glenn Colville Jr., 43,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/glenn-colville-cyclist-hit-and-run-vigil\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who was killed in Port Richmond on April 12.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople on bikes belong on these streets, and we remember those who showed us why that fight can\u2019t wait,\u201d said Lana Harshaw, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. \u201cThere\u2019s real grief here today, and we won\u2019t pretend otherwise. Showing up on a bike in this city has always been an act of hope, and everything we\u2019ve won for safer streets in Philadelphia came from people exactly like you, who refused to look away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/PXL_20260527_233523233.MP-ed-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-224478\"  \/>Hundreds of Philadelphia cyclists ride from City Hall to the Museum of Art during the 22nd annual Philly Ride of Silence on May 27, 2026. (Nick Kariuki\/Billy Penn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philly\u2019s ride is part of a global movement across the U.S. and seven other countries, with the goals of honoring the cyclists killed by vehicles, supporting the ones who\u2019ve been injured and educating drivers about sharing the road safely with cyclists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike other protest rides held by groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/09\/06\/cyclists-protest-ride-spruce-pine-philly-bike-action-street-safety\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philly Bike Action<\/a>, the riders in this procession remain as silent as possible throughout the trip. Scheinfeld said the route passes through the busiest parts of the city, to emphasize the somber tone of the riders to onlookers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re not just having a bike conversation or a general ride, but it\u2019s something that\u2019s more serious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC09677-ed-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-224474\"  \/>Hundreds of Philadelphia cyclists attend the beginning of the 22nd annual Philly Ride of Silence outside City Hall on May 27, 2026. (Nick Kariuki\/Billy Penn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only noise during the ride, besides the muttered warnings of potholes and the whirring of bike spokes and gears, was two bells being rung by organizers standing next to white-painted \u201cghost-bikes,\u201d to mark the spots on the route where two cyclists were killed in previous years: near Spruce and 11 streets where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/trash-truck-kills-cyclist-center-city\/34501\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Fredericks was struck by a sanitation truck in 2016<\/a>, and by Spruce and 18th streets where <a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/barbara-friedes-death-driver-pleads-guilty-crash-killed-chop-doctor-bicycle\/16181813\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Friedes was killed by a drunk, speeding driver<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colville\u2019s sister, Shannon Colville, joined Wednesday night\u2019s ride and described it afterwards as an amazing experience that touched her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s awesome.
