Flashback:<\/strong> May 29, 1981<\/p>\n 1981:<\/strong> After he had been indicted<\/a> in 1977, in connection with 16 Chicago-area bombings, \u00d3scar L\u00f3pez Rivera was\u00a0arrested<\/a> by police in Glenview. He was\u00a0found guilty<\/a> by a federal jury on July 24, 1981, on seven counts of weapons, explosives and seditious conspiracy charges, then sentenced to 55 years<\/a>\u00a0in prison.<\/p>\n President Barack Obama in 2017 commuted<\/a> L\u00f3pez\u2019s prison sentence for his role in the FALN, an organization that in the 1970s and early 1980s plotted bombings, prison escapes and armed robberies in an effort to secure independence for Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n How many presidential pardons or sentence commutations have been granted to people from Illinois?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Weather records <\/strong>(from the National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n 1962:<\/strong> The Chicago Cubs hired John \u201cBuck\u201d O\u2019Neil<\/a> as the first Black on-field coach<\/a> in major league history.<\/p>\n \u201cI have never told anyone this before, but I was the one who talked to [then-Cubs owner] P.K. Wrigley and asked him to hire Buck,\u201d Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks<\/a> told the Tribune in 2006.<\/p>\n \u201cThat had always been between just me and Buck. I\u2019m saying this with love today; it was me. I said to Mr. Wrigley: \u2018There is a man I know who has a lot of talent with baseball, it\u2019s Buck O\u2019Neil.’\u201d<\/p>\n First words of Chicago Cubs managers, from World Series aspirations to needing to be \u2018crazy\u2019 \u2014 but not going \u2018cuckoo\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n A solid-hitting first baseman, O\u2019Neil barnstormed with pitching legend Satchel Paige during his youth and twice won a Negro leagues batting title. He later became a pennant-winning manager of the Kansas City Monarchs.<\/p>\n O\u2019Neil \u2014 who fell short of induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by one vote in 2006<\/a> \u2014 was finally enshrined<\/a> there in 2022. He died in 2006<\/a> at age 94.<\/p>\n Great America’s newest ride, the Tidal Wave, was inaugurated at the Gurnee amusement park, May 6, 1978. Hailed as the world’s largest roller coaster, the 76-foot high vertical loop catapults riders at 55 miles an hour into a 142-foot incline that is banked at 70 degrees. The ride, which is taller than the Statue of Liberty and took four months to build, made its first 300-foot ascent over the 200-acre park. On clear days, riders in the revolving cabin can see Lake Michigan and portions of Chicago’s skyline. Roller coasters including the corkscrew barrel roll Turn of the Century were a big hit.<\/p>\n 2013:<\/strong> Catcher Dioner Navarro<\/a> had the first three home-run game of his career, connecting from both sides of the plate at Wrigley Field to lead the Cubs to a 9-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Navarro had 6 RBIs and scored four times.
