{"id":829846,"date":"2026-05-29T10:31:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/829846\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T10:31:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:31:16","slug":"greg-mcelroy-ranks-top-10-defensive-lines-in-college-football-heading-into-2026-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/829846\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg McElroy ranks Top 10 defensive lines in college football heading into 2026 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just months away from kick-off to the 2026 college football season, ESPN\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/greg-mcelroy-46902\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greg McElroy<\/a><\/strong> has ranked his top-10 defensive lines in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>A dominant defensive line has been crucial to National Championship runs from multiple programs in recent history, including <strong>Indiana<\/strong> in 2025, <strong>Ohio State<\/strong> in 2024, <strong>Michigan<\/strong> in 2023, <strong>Georgia<\/strong>\u2018s back-to-back wins in 2022 and 2021, and <strong>Alabama<\/strong>\u2018s dominant run in the mid-to-late 2010s. According to McElroy, the <strong>Oregon<\/strong> Ducks will sport the best DL in the sport this season.<\/p>\n<p>Without further ado, McElroy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jqmEXEFZf94?si=T7WDFqKLCCZyUk97\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entire list is below<\/a>. It includes four SEC teams, three Big Ten teams, one ACC team, one Big 12 team, and one independent.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Oregon<\/strong> defensive line, led by first year defensive coordinator <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/chris-hampton-135002\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Hampton<\/a><\/strong>, tops McElroy\u2019s list of top DL\u2019s in the country. <strong>Oregon<\/strong> returns four starters from last year\u2019s defensive line, including projected 2027 First Round pick DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/amauri-washington-147295\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A\u2019Mauri Washington<\/a><\/strong> (33 tackles and 1.5 sacks in \u201925), NT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/bear-alexander-9456\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bear Alexander<\/a><\/strong> (50 tackles and one sack in \u201925), OLB <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/teitum-tuioti-111133\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teitum Tuioti<\/a><\/strong> (68 tackles and 9.5 sacks in \u201925), and OLB <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/matayo-uiagalelei-84974\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matayo Uiagalelei<\/a><\/strong> (34 tackles and six sacks in \u201925). The Ducks are seeking their first run to the National Championship Game under head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/dan-lanning-134322\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Lanning<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have four returning starters with legitimate First Round potential,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got two top-10 interior guys, and two top-10 EDGE guys. Great depth along the way, and a head coach that knows the defense like the back of his hand. So <strong>Oregon<\/strong> right now is the undisputed best defensive line in college football heading into the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Texas<\/strong> defensive line is ramped up and ready to go following a bit of a disappointing 2025 season for the Longhorns. <strong>Texas<\/strong> returns one of the best defensive players in the sport, DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/colin-simmons-25089\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Simmons<\/a><\/strong> (43 tackles and 12 sacks in \u201925), to anchor the line. Simmons is projected to be one of the first players selected in the 2027 NFL Draft. Along with Simmons, the Longhorns return All-SEC Freshman Team selection DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/lance-jackson-150199\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lance Jackson<\/a><\/strong> (16 tackles and two sacks in \u201925) and DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/hero-kanu-145774\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hero Kanu<\/a><\/strong> (31 tackles and two sacks in \u201925). With veteran defensive mind <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/will-muschamp-131364\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Muschamp<\/a><\/strong> taking over in his first year as DC, <strong>Texas<\/strong> is looking to return to the College Football Playoff following a blip year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>[Will] Muschamp<\/strong>, this is his first season running the defense with this roster,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cBut, he has head coaching experience. We know he\u2019s been unbelievable as a defensive mind for a very long time. But, there could be a bit of a learning curve in understanding what his personnel does at a really, really, high level. The projection of what this group could be is what keeps them at No. 2, and not at No. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the <strong>Notre Dame<\/strong> defensive line was one of the best in the country last season, the Irish were on the outside looking into the Playoff following two early season losses to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/aggie-yell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas A&amp;M<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/miami-hurricanes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami<\/a><\/strong>. This season, head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/marcus-freeman-82674\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marcus Freeman<\/a><\/strong> returns star DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/boubacar-traore-11474\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boubacar Traore<\/a><\/strong> (37 tackles and 6.5 sacks in \u201925) and DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/bryce-young-156026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryce Young<\/a><\/strong> (20 tackles and two sacks in \u201925) as the Irish look to return to the Playoff a season removed from making a run to the National Championship Game. They made multiple splashes in the Portal as well, landing DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/francis-brewu-175123\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Francis Brewu<\/a><\/strong> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/pitt-sports-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh<\/a><\/strong>) and DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/tionne-gray-154742\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tionne Gray<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>Oregon<\/strong>) to help round out the DL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you could make the case that [the defensive line] is as deep as it\u2019s been in sometime for <strong>Notre Dame,<\/strong>\u201d McElroy said. \u201cWe know the secondary is elite, we know the linebackers have a chance to be elite, but the reason why many believe this could be <strong>Notre Dame<\/strong>\u2018s year is because of this defensive line. They are in at No. 3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/dabo-swinney-131248\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dabo Swinney<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s tenure at <strong>Clemson<\/strong>, the Tigers have been known for their dominant defensive line. All-time collegiate stars, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/dexter-lawrence-36734\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dexter Lawrence<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/christian-wilkins-23240\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Wilkins<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/clelin-ferrell-23986\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clelin Ferrell<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/dj-reader-jr-27641\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">D.J. Reader<\/a><\/strong> led the program to some of its highest heights. Last season was a massive let-down, however, for <strong>Clemson<\/strong>\u2018s defense. It was middle of the pack in the ACC after being projected to be one of the best in the country. With returning stars such as DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/will-heldt-151221\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Heldt<\/a><\/strong> (47 tackles and 7.5 sacks in \u201925) leading the way, <strong>Clemson<\/strong> is looking to return to the heights of the College Football Playoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a big believer in what they have coming back, and I\u2019m a big believer in their upside,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cEspecially, with the chip on their shoulder that feels like <strong>Clemson<\/strong> is approaching the season with. Maybe a bit higher than most, but still optimistic and bullish on what the <strong>Clemson<\/strong> Tigers could be this season. That\u2019s why I have them at No. 4.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first season of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/pete-golding-131478\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Golding<\/a><\/strong> era in Oxford is rapidly approaching, and expectations are sky high following the Rebels\u2019 run to the Semifinals of the College Football Playoff last year. The <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> defensive line is loaded, anchored by returning stars DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/william-echoles-175322\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Echoles<\/a><\/strong> (68 tackles and five sacks in \u201925) and LB <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/suntarine-perkins-109281\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suntarine Perkins<\/a><\/strong> (81 tackles and 4.5 sacks in \u201925). The college football world will quickly get a look at the Rebels\u2019 DL, as it will clash against former head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/lane-kiffin-135051\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lane Kiffin<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/lsu-tigers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LSU<\/a><\/strong> in a monstrous matchup on Sept. 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> has the improved depth,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cTheir start line talent is great. But, the improved depth is what lands them in the top-five for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michigan<\/strong> is now led by long-time <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/utah-utes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Utah<\/a><\/strong> head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/kyle-whittingham-133984\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Whittingham<\/a><\/strong>, as the Wolverines seek a return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since it won the National Championship in 2023. Whittingham brought star DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/john-henry-daley-63784\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Henry Daley<\/a><\/strong> (48 tackles and 11.5 sacks in \u201925), who was one of the highest ranked players in the Transfer Portal, with him from <strong>Utah<\/strong> to <strong>Michigan<\/strong>. Along with returning program anchors DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/enow-etta-41898\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Enow Etta<\/a><\/strong> (15 tackles and 0.5 sacks in \u201925) and DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/trey-pierce-iii-148245\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trey Pierce III<\/a><\/strong> (30 tackles in \u201925), <strong>Michigan<\/strong> is primed to have one of the best defensive lines in the Big Ten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf [<strong>John Henry Daley<\/strong> is ready to go for the 2025 season], this is a top-five potential line,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cBut, if Henry Daley isn\u2019t necessarily what he was last year and the EDGE depth behind him is unproven, there\u2019s a little bit of uncertainty. That is the only thing keeping <strong>Michigan<\/strong> from climbing higher for now. Plus, just watching <strong>Michigan<\/strong> on the defensive front, you think about what <strong>Kyle Whittingham<\/strong> was at <strong>Utah<\/strong>. You just know <strong>Michigan<\/strong> is going to be really good in the trenches, especially on the defensive line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fresh off its run to the College Football Playoff last season, <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong> returns one of the best defensive lines in the country. Projected 2027 First Round pick DT <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/david-stone-32134\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Stone<\/a><\/strong> (43 tackles and 1.5 sacks) leads the way, joined by DL <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/taylor-wein-162660\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Wein<\/a><\/strong> (39 tackles and seven sacks in \u201925) and DL <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/pj-adebawore-147285\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adepoju Adebawore<\/a><\/strong> (17 tackles and 2.5 sacks in \u201925). The Sooners are seeking back-to-back CFP appearances for the first time since they made three consecutive trips from 2017-2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen <strong>[David] Stone<\/strong> puts it all together, and I fully anticipate that he will this year, this <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong> defensive front could easily blossom into a top-five unit,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cHowever, in the preseason, I have them in at No. 7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reigning National Champions head towards the 2026 college football season with the No. 8 ranked defensive line, according to <strong>Greg McElroy<\/strong>. <strong>Indiana<\/strong> returns star DL <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/tyrique-tucker-118740\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyrique Tucker<\/a><\/strong> (38 tackles and six sacks in \u201925), who originally followed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/curt-cignetti-131110\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Curt Cignetti<\/a><\/strong> from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/james-madison-dukes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Madison<\/a><\/strong> to <strong>Indiana<\/strong>, to anchor the DL. Cignetti and co. also made a splash in the Portal, hauling in players such as DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/chiddi-obiazor-156489\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chiddi Obiazor<\/a><\/strong> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/kansas-state-wildcats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kansas State<\/a><\/strong>), DE <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/tobi-osunsanmi-113206\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tobi Osunsanmi<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>Kansas State<\/strong>), and DL <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/joshua-burnham-67853\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joshua Burnham<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>Notre Dame<\/strong>) to round out the defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anchor of a National Championship defensive line [Tucker] in a proven system under a coach that has never finished lower than double-digit wins since he started at James Madison,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cI think that\u2019s a pretty good starting point for the <strong>Indiana<\/strong> Hoosiers. That\u2019s why they\u2019re in at No. 8.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fresh off its first ever appearance in the College Football Playoff, <strong>Texas Tech<\/strong> returns the best defensive line in the Big 12 Conference. That DL is anchored by one of the best defensive players in all of college football, DL <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/aj-holmes-6221\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A.J. Holmes Jr.<\/a><\/strong> (38 tackles and 4.5 sacks in \u201925). And of course, the Red Raiders made multiple splashes in the Transfer Portal. Most of the noise around the program this offseason has surrounded <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/brendan-sorsby-13764\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brendan Sorsby<\/a><\/strong>, but the defensive line certainly deserves more love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program has rebuilt its defensive line a couple of times in the past three years,\u201d McElroy said. \u201cThe model is proven, which is why <strong>Texas Tech<\/strong> comes in at No. 9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>Georgia<\/strong>\u2018s defensive line rounds out McElroy\u2019s top-10 rankings. The Bulldogs ranked last in the SEC in sacks last season, but still finished as one of the best defensive units in the conference.
