If it reads like something off of Reddit, that\u2019s because it is something off of Reddit. A quick Google search confirms the remarks appeared two months ago<\/a> on a thread soliciting reactions to the premiere of \u201cThe Real Housewives of Rhode Island<\/a>.” The comment <\/b>garnered a mere 27 upvotes.<\/p>\n

Why is it on a billboard?<\/p>\n

For weeks now, photos<\/a> of the sign<\/a> have circulated around Reddit<\/a>, raising more questions than answers. Is it some sort of guerilla-marketing campaign by Bravo, the television network behind the show? If not, who decided to put up the random critique of the reality series? How much did it cost? What does it mean? Why even do this?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of different theories, which I didn\u2019t necessarily expect,\u201d Darian Newman, a 30-year-old artist and designer behind the billboard, told the Globe.<\/p>\n

The short answer to many of those questions is, essentially, the sign was more or less homework. <\/p>\n

A fan of the \u201cReal Housewives\u201d franchise, Newman, who is pursuing a master of fine arts degree in graphic designat the Rhode Island School of Design, said he dreamed up the billboard in response to a class assignment that prompted students to \u201cactivate a space.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the show started to premiere, there seemed to just be so much commentary around not just the show, but around the state of Rhode Island, and whether or not this was an accurate representation of the state,\u201d said Newman, a Massachusetts native who now lives in Providence. \u201cIf you\u2019re watching \u2018Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,\u2019 those conversations are not really happening as much, or at least not in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Newman said the sign itself was enough to satisfy the requirements, he ended up taking the assignment a step further. <\/p>\n

In the surrounding area are stickers on street signs and poles with commentary he also pulled from Reddit, he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks as if people are talking about the state of Rhode Island, so it\u2019s like a little sticker that says, \u2018Welcome to Rhode Island. It\u2019s boring, but I did like the outside scenery,\u2019 and that wasn\u2019t someone talking about their trip to Rhode Island, that was someone talking about their response to \u2018The Real Housewives of Rhode Island,\u2019\u201d Newman said.<\/p>\n

Newman said he <\/b>also placed a sign in Providence\u2019s Memorial Park that read, \u201cWelcome to Rhode Island Bitch,\u201d one of the snarky quips from the show<\/a>, although it appears it has since been removed. <\/p>\n

Newman said there are \u201ca few other little, I guess you could call them moments hidden around town that I don\u2019t think anyone has quite noticed yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally what I wanted to explore was the shift in dynamic of the audience, and … taking the viewer and letting the viewer now become the spectacle by publishing that commentary,\u201d Newman said.<\/p>\n

A representative from Lamar, the company that owns the billboard space, confirmed Newman purchased the slot. Newman declined to say how much he spent, but has it booked until about June 4.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sort of this billboard that faces inwards rather than out, where there\u2019s more traffic, which I think to me represents this sort of feedback loop of we are inside Rhode Island talking about Rhode Island,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Newman, who has previously worked in brand design and editorial design for tech companies, said he doesn\u2019t know anything about the person behind the Reddit comment.<\/p>\n

That is Danielle, a 37-year-old Taunton, Mass., resident who declined to give her last name, but said she\u2019s often in Rhode Island. She thinks the whole thing was kind of cool, but added, \u201cI was probably half asleep when I made that comment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I was trying to say, though, was \u2026 [the housewives on the show] kept saying it\u2019s a small state, everybody knows everything about everybody, and they just kept talking about Rhode Island, and I\u2019m like, \u2018It\u2019s not, that\u2019s not really how it is,\u2019\u201d Danielle said. \u201cI mean, you know, these people are not like a real representation of the actual people who live in Rhode Island.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not everyone agrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never shut up about Rhode Island,\u201d wrote<\/a> one user. \u201cAnd I know a lot of others who talk it up constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another wrote<\/a>, \u201cPeople definitely do mention it a lot that are from here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newman said part of what he liked about Danielle\u2018s comment <\/b>was \u201chow much it does not ring true to people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like what they\u2019re trying to say is, \u2018You can take Rhode Island, you can put it on television, you can try to make it this spectacle and look any way that you want, but I live here, and that\u2019s not true to me,\u2019 \u201d Newman said. \u201c\u2018And because I am a person who lives here, I am the authority.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

The comment \u201crepresents this dynamic I\u2019m trying to play with, of: This person believes that they are the authority on something. So then I\u2019m taking it, I am blowing it up, and really letting them, in a way, be the authority,\u201d Newman said. \u201cIt opens up the debate of, \u2018Is this true or is this not true?\u2019 And who gets to say?\u201d <\/p>\n

Still, Newman said he wasn\u2019t expecting the attention the billboard has received.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of fun in the mystery of it, and in the confusion of it, and in the speculation, so I think being able to create that moment of people coming together, and even if it\u2019s just getting a quick laugh, that\u2019s something that\u2019s felt really great about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Shannon McNamara, of Tiverton, R.I., saw the billboard on Reddit and said, \u201cthe mere existence of it is hysterical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just love that it exists,\u201d said McNamara, who is also a graphic designer. \u201cI don\u2019t even need to know why.\u201d<\/p>\n
