Billionaire investor Mark Cuban notes this new phase will see firms locking down valuable AI innovations and expertise rather than sharing them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Major tech companies are in a fierce competition to be at the forefront of AI by recruiting top talent, massively investing in research and development and infrastructure, and scooping up smaller startups left and right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This so-called AI war is about to become even more aggressive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat people are missing about AI, [in my opinion], is no company is going to spend what will end up being more than a trillion dollars and accept not being dominant,\u201d Mark Cuban wrote Sunday on <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">X<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cThey will find a way to battle. I don\u2019t know how, other than to guess it will get ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tech giants like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Apple<\/a> have been ferociously recruiting top AI talent\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/11\/how-much-ai-salary-meta-zuckerberg-200-million-compensation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/11\/how-much-ai-salary-meta-zuckerberg-200-million-compensation\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dishing out enormous pay packages<\/a> to poach them. Top-tier AI researchers at Meta are <a href=\"http:\/\/v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to http:\/\/v\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">reportedly being offered<\/a> total compensation packages of up to $300 million over four years, with some first-year earnings over $100 million. One example was a former Apple executive Ruoming Pang, who Bloomberg reported is joining Meta\u2019s \u201cSuperintelligence\u201d team for $200 million.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Microsoft announced it was investing about $80 billion this year alone on developing data centers to train AI models and deploy cloud-based applications. An AI researcher at Microsoft makes about $431,000, on average, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/companies\/microsoft\/salaries\/software-engineer\/title\/ai-researcher\/locations\/united-states?country=254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.levels.fyi\/companies\/microsoft\/salaries\/software-engineer\/title\/ai-researcher\/locations\/united-states?country=254\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">Levels.fyi<\/a>.
