{"id":83051,"date":"2025-07-22T11:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T11:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83051\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T11:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T11:28:08","slug":"venice-film-festival-2025-lineup-unveiled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83051\/","title":{"rendered":"Venice Film Festival 2025 Lineup Unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOscar season starts here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith its 2025 line-up, announced Tuesday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/venice-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_venice-film-festival_1\" data-tag=\"venice-film-festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venice Film Festival<\/a> has (again) taken the award season pole position, with a program packed with a frankly absurd number of must-see movies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong the hot awards titles heading to the Lido are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/smashing-machine-trailer-dwayne-johnson-1236202783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benny Safdie\u2019s The Smashing Machine<\/a>, from A24, featuring Dwayne Johnson as two\u2011time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/after-the-hunt-trailer-julia-roberts-andrew-garfield-1236317252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#MeToo\u2013inspired thriller After the Hunt<\/a>, for Amazon MGM Studios, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, will premiere out of competition; and Guillermo del Toro\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/frankenstein-trailer-jacob-elordi-as-the-monster-1236232956\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dark reimagining of Frankenstein<\/a>, featuring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth, a Netflix production. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis will mark the Venice festival debut for both Roberts and Johnson. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNetflix, which sat out Vence last year, is back in force for 2025. Alongside Frankenstein, the streamer has  Noah Baumbach\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/jay-kelly-george-clooney-adam-sandler-noah-baumbach-release-1236208108\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comedy\u2011drama Jay Kelly<\/a>, co-written with Emily Mortimer, and headlined by George Clooney, premiering in competition, and Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s ticking bomb geopolitical thriller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/a-house-of-dynamite-kathryn-bigelow-release-netflix-1236294156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A House of Dynamite<\/a>, starring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso and Jared Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Venice line-up is an embarrassment of riches, for award-watchers and regular film fans alike, with the competition selection including the latest from A-list auteurs Park Chan-wook (No Other Choice), Fran\u00e7ois Ozon (L\u2019Etranger), and Laszlo Nemes (Orphan). A year after Brady Corbet\u2019s The Brutalist launched in Venice, en route to three Oscar wins, the film\u2019s co-writer (and producer) Mona Fastvold arrives in competition with The Testament of Ann Lee, a historical drama musical film she co-wrote with Corbet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tYorgos Lanthimos, a Venice Golden Lion winner for Poor Things, returns in competition with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/emma-stone-yorgos-lanthimos-bugonia-trailer-1236300547\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bugonia<\/a>, an adaptation of Jang Joon-Hwan\u2019s 2003 South Korean sci-fi film Save the Green Planet!, featuring his frequent collaborator Emma Stone. Focus Features will release the film stateside, with Universal Pictures handling internationally outside of Korea, where CJ ENM will release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd iconic indie director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jim-jarmusch\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jim-jarmusch_1\" data-tag=\"jim-jarmusch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Jarmusch<\/a>, a Cannes regular, will make his Lido debut with Mubi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/jim-jarmusch-film-father-mother-sister-brother-cast-1235900897\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father Mother Sister Brother<\/a>, a triptych starring Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 82nd Venice competition line-up also includes the latest from A-list auteurs Park Chan-wook (No Other Choice), Fran\u00e7ois Ozon (L\u2019Etranger), and Laszlo Nemes (Orphan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tItalian Oscar-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/paolo-sorrentino-0\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paolo-sorrentino-0_1\" data-tag=\"paolo-sorrentino-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paolo Sorrentino<\/a> (The Great Beauty) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/paolo-sorrentino-la-grazia-set-to-open-venice-film-festival-1236306584\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will open this year\u2019s festival<\/a> with La Grazia (Grace), a love story starring his long-time collaborator Toni Servillo. La Grazia, co-starring Diamonds actor Anna Ferzetti, will premiere in competition on Aug. 27. Mubi picked up the film ahead of its Venice bow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDog 51, a new action-packed French sci-fi thriller from Bac Nord director Cedric Jimenez will close the festival, out of competition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGus Van Sant\u2019s return to feature films, Dead Man\u2019s Wire, starring Bill Skarsgard, will also screen out of competition. Other out of competition highlights include Anders Thomas Jensen\u2019s Danish dark comedy The Last Viking starring Mads Mikkelsen, and Julian Schnabel\u2019s long-awaited The Hand of Dante. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis year\u2019s Golden Lion career achievement honorees are legendary German director Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man) and Vertigo star Kim Novak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tVenice\u2019s Classic sidebar, which includes a selection on documentaries about cinema, will this year include Mike Figgis\u2019 Megadoc, a behind-the-scene look at the making of Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s decades-in-the-making Megalopolis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTwo-time Oscar-winner Alexander Payne heads up this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/alexander-payne-venice-film-festival-2025-jury-president-1236202011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competition jury as president<\/a>, and together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/venice-film-festibal-2025-competition-jury-fernanda-torres-1236319407\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international film talents<\/a> including Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, French director St\u00e9phane Briz\u00e9, Italian director Maura Delpero, Chinese actress Zhao Tao, and Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, will pick the 2025 Golden Lion winner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe 2025 Venice film festival runs Aug. 27 to Sept. 9. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>Opening Film<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLa Grazia, dir.
