{"id":83118,"date":"2025-07-22T12:02:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83118\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T12:02:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:02:10","slug":"chalmers-ley-in-tears-as-france-pays-tribute-to-late-son-in-first-parliamentary-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83118\/","title":{"rendered":"Chalmers, Ley in tears as France pays tribute to late son in first parliamentary speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Federal politicians from across the aisle have been brought to tears as new Labor MP Ali France delivered an emotional first speech, where she paid tribute to her late teenage son as being &#8220;instrumental&#8221; to her success in defeating then-Liberal leader Peter Dutton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Among those wiping away tears on the floor of parliament on Tuesday night were Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and Treasurer Jim Chalmers, as well as Ms France herself as she reflected on some of her final moments with her 19-year-old son Henry, who passed away from leukaemia in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But her <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-22\/federal-politics-live-blog-parliament-returns-july-22\/105557602\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speech was also filled with pride<\/a>, as she addressed the &#8220;epic journey&#8221; to becoming the first person in Australian history to unseat an opposition leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Winning Dickson was highly unlikely, and to some, an insurmountable mountain,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It took seven years to climb, as a single mum, with one leg, battling one of the most prolific politicians of our time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But her journey to Canberra was not sad nor happy, but &#8220;human,&#8221; she said, as she promised her life experience would shape her contribution to public life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ali France and Albanese\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/913f303464800acc3ba189c4d5f2d016\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ali France and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the maiden speeches to parliament on Tuesday. (ABC News: Luke Stephenson)<\/p>\n<p>Henry&#8217;s courage a companion in campaign<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When Ms France won the Brisbane seat, she was still grieving Henry&#8217;s death, just over a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The week before [he passed], he was able to come home for a couple of nights,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As he slept beside her, she was in awe of his courage and continual smile, despite &#8220;unbelievable pain and the never-ending hospital stays and treatments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am so, so grateful for those hours,&#8221; she said, wiping away tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He told me many times that this election was my time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He was convinced I would win and said a number of times, &#8216;don&#8217;t make me the excuse for you not doing important things.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;His words, his courage were with me every day of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Henry was instrumental in getting me to this place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-03\/ali-france-wins-dickson-against-dutton\/105247972\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who is Ali France?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Labor&#8217;s Ali France has toppled Opposition Leader Peter Dutton in his seat of Dickson. It was the former journalist and para-athlete&#8217;s third time running in the seat.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors, former premier watch on<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms France also spoke about building resilience, re-learning how to walk after one of her legs was crushed by a car in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The doctors who saved her life and helped her walk again were among the list of people she thanked in her first speech, as they watched on from the gallery above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Also in attendance was her former boss and Queensland Labor leader, Steven Miles, whom she thanked for his support, alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She attributed succeeding \u2014 and putting an end to Mr Dutton&#8217;s more than 20-year political career \u2014 to &#8220;a lifetime of small acts of kindness and support from so many good people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Kindness, a helping hand, opportunity, and open doors have got me here, and that&#8217;s what I will be giving to the people of Dickson,&#8221;
