{"id":832341,"date":"2026-05-30T12:41:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T12:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/832341\/"},"modified":"2026-05-30T12:41:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T12:41:24","slug":"aukus-partners-unveil-plan-to-develop-underwater-drones-by-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/832341\/","title":{"rendered":"AUKUS partners unveil plan to develop underwater drones by 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The US, Australia and United Kingdom have unveiled a new &#8220;signature&#8221; project to develop cutting edge weapons systems and sensors for underwater drones as they try to reinvigorate the second pillar of the AUKUS agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The new &#8220;marquee&#8221; project was unveiled by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Defence Minister Richard Marles and UK Defence Secretary John Healey at the US embassy in Singapore, on the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-30\/pete-hegseth-us-will-prevent-china-hegemony-shangri-la-dialogue\/106740596\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106740596\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-30\/pete-hegseth-us-will-prevent-china-hegemony-shangri-la-dialogue\/106740596\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US won&#8217;t let China impose &#8216;hegemony&#8217; in Asia, Hegseth says<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The US Defense Secretary addressed Asia&#8217;s most important defence summit, but did not mention Taiwan as questions remain over a stalled weapons package.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While most of the public debate on AUKUS has focused on the Pillar I nuclear-powered submarines plan, there has been less attention on the Pillar II initiative to develop sophisticated military technology, with numerous critics saying the program has been drifting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Healey told journalists that &#8220;for too long on AUKUS we have talked too much and delivered too little&#8221; but declared that the three current governments were intent on changing that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Marles called the announcement &#8220;hugely significant&#8221; and said all three countries would move to deliver the new technology from 2027.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;This is all three countries putting real money behind a capability we will put into the hands of the war fighter next year,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hegseth told journalists in Singapore that the new drones would help the three nations maintain their &#8220;collective advantage&#8221; in the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The exact quantum of the new investment in underwater drone technology is not clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Healey said he had committed more than $US170 million ($236m) to the project, but neither Australia or the US have yet publicly committed to a figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">All three governments hope the new initiative will help develop underwater drones that can protect undersea cables, engage in sophisticated surveillance missions and strike enemy targets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Three men in suits and ties walk together outside with happy expressions\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/54fbbd5079f5271432e01ce8d975e0ea.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The AUKUS defence pact between Australia, the United States and Britain was formed in 2021. (Reuters: Edgar Su)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Healey said the new drone technology would help all three countries &#8220;detect, deter and deal with threats, including to the underwater pipelines and cables which so much of our daily life depends on&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier in the day <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-30\/pete-hegseth-us-will-prevent-china-hegemony-shangri-la-dialogue\/106740596\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106740596\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Marles also sounded the alarm about the number of subsea cables which have been cut<\/a> in the Baltic Sea and near Taiwan, saying if they were intentional acts then some countries could be &#8220;testing our political will to respond&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The head of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute Justin Bassi said the three nations were &#8220;smart&#8221; to reveal what work was being done on the underwater drones.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Democracies are being tested by Russia and China with hybrid threats, including cable cutting and illegal naval actions,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This signals that these acts of sabotage and aggression will no longer be tolerated by AUKUS nations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">China has previously described cable damage incidents in the Taiwan Strait as &#8220;common maritime accidents&#8221;, while Russia has dismissed accusations of involvement in similar incidents in the Baltic as &#8220;completely groundless&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">All three AUKUS defence ministers also again backed in the plan to sell <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-27\/no-plan-b-for-submarines-if-aukus-fails-says-defence-minister\/106728832\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106728832\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia Class nuclear powered submarines<\/a> to Australia in the 2030s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The three ministers said in their joint statement the US would &#8220;streamline&#8221; the process to ensure Australia could acquire three of the submarines &#8220;already in service&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That appears to be a slight shift from previous statements and opens the door to Australia buying three submarines from the existing fleet of Virginia class submarines \u2014 rather than buying a mixture of submarines both in the water and off the production line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The US, Australia and United Kingdom have unveiled a new &#8220;signature&#8221;
