{"id":833458,"date":"2026-05-31T00:49:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T00:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/833458\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T00:49:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T00:49:16","slug":"eric-weddle-not-impressed-with-michigan-qb-bryce-underwood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/833458\/","title":{"rendered":"Eric Weddle not impressed with Michigan QB Bryce Underwood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former All-Pro NFL safety Eric Weddle is not a believer in Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood.<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY-dWpRFMbw\/?img_index=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cZero 2 Sixty\u201d<\/a> podcast, Weddle, who attended the Wolverines\u2019 spring practices, said that it would not be surprising if Michigan\u2019s backup quarterback is playing instead of Underwood come this fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark my words, I was out there for spring ball,\u201d Weddle said. \u201cDon\u2019t be surprised if the backup [is] playing early because that Underwood kid, you know, I don\u2019t think he could throw or play quarterback, so we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39536379\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2019-weddle-coming-retirement-rejoin-15060612.jpg\" alt=\"Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle in a white practice jersey.\" class=\"wp-image-39536379\"  \/>Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle watches during an NFL football training camp in Irvine, Calif., on July 30, 2019.  AP<\/p>\n<p>Weddle, who spent 14 seasons in the NFL with the Chargers, Ravens and Rams, explained that quarterbacks should be taught to play their position first, and be an athlete second, adding that this is what he tells his son, Gaige Weddle, who is a 2028 four-star QB recruit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand. I don\u2019t understand, like it\u2019s just quarterbacks in general, but I don\u2019t understand how the position is not being taught like from the pocket,\u201d Weddle said. \u201cLike I try to coach Gaige that you are a quarterback first who can be an athlete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not an athlete who plays quarterback\u2026You get to the next level, everyone\u2019s as fast as you, everyone\u2019s as strong as you, like your mind, processing, pocket awareness, feel, and getting the ball out on time is what I\u2019ve stressed to him most, as a quarterback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weddle\u2019s comments come after Underwood, the consensus No. 1-ranked 2025 QB recruit out of high school, had a somewhat underwhelming freshman campaign with Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Through 13 games with the Wolverines, Underwood, 18, threw for 2,428 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions while posting a 60.3 completion percentage, helping lead Michigan to a 9-4 record. <\/p>\n<p>He added 392 rushing yards with six scores on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Underwood also had a disappointing performance for Michigan in a 41-27 Citrus Bowl loss against Texas, passing for 199 yards \u2014 going 23-for-42 \u2014 with two touchdowns and three interceptions.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39536387\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2257837221.jpg\" alt=\"A Michigan player running with the football evades a diving Texas player during the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.\" class=\"wp-image-39536387\"  \/>Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood (19) rushes with the ball during the Cheez-It Bowl between the Michigan Wolverines and the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL. Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Despite the poor showing, Underwood recently told reporters that he has high expectations for both himself and the Wolverines heading into the 2026 season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like the whole team, and everything that happened to us even after the season, I had to get over it,\u201d Underwood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/other\/went-through-a-lot-bryce-underwood-admits-painful-reality-after-poor-performance\/ar-AA23JMUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said on May 21<\/a>. \u201cThat was the only option we had. It\u2019s the only option I had.
