{"id":8347,"date":"2025-06-23T15:44:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T15:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/8347\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T15:44:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T15:44:08","slug":"jacksonville-property-management-company-to-pay-for-illegally-charging-military-tenants-doj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/8347\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville property management company to pay for illegally charging military tenants: DOJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 A Jacksonville-based property management company will pay $64,000 in compensation and penalties after the U.S. Department of Justice found it violated federal law by charging early termination fees to military servicemembers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/jacksonville-property-management-company-pay-compensation-and-penalties-imposing-unlawful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/jacksonville-property-management-company-pay-compensation-and-penalties-imposing-unlawful\">release from the U.S. Department of Justice<\/a>, JWB Real Estate Management imposed unlawful fees on at least six servicemembers who attempted to terminate their leases after receiving military relocation orders\u2014a right protected under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As part of the settlement, JWB will pay over $39,000 to the affected servicemembers and a $25,000 civil penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The company has also agreed to revise its policies and training to ensure future compliance with the SCRA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOur military families already shoulder the burden of military-ordered moves and deployments,\u201d said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon. \u201cWe will not allow them to be penalized by landlords for answering the call of duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">U.S. Attorney Gregory W.
