Kathy Hochul and NYPD Commish Jessica Tisch <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/30\/us-news\/muslim-interfaith-activist-marching-in-sundays-israel-parade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stood in solidary <\/a>with the Big Apple\u2019s Jewish community at the Israel Day Parade on Sunday, while Mayor Zohran Mamdani instead spent the day touting his 2029 re-election bid \u2014 and riding his bike.<\/p>\n<p>Former Mayors Eric Adams and Michael Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AndrewCraft\/status\/2061110937558380822\" rel=\"nofollow\">joined the unifying celebration <\/a>along with thousands of New Yorkers on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, as did Hochul, the city\u2019s top cop and a slew of other leaders and elected officials across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Aristide Economopoulos for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani instead opts to ride a bike \u2014 bizarrely dressed in a suit and dress shoes and without wearing a safety helmet. Lone Pine Press for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg, a staunch Israel supporter who marched in the parade for all 12 years he was in office, wore blue and white and waved the flag of Israel as he walked beside Tisch.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd started chanting \u201cWe miss you, Mike!\u201d and \u201cJessie for mayor!\u201d when they saw the pair marching behind the Police Department\u2019s banner, flanked by a cadre of New York\u2019s Finest.<\/p>\n<p>Tisch last week stood beside her boss Mamdani at a press conference about security at the event and said, \u201cIt\u2019s the mayor\u2019s decision not to march, and it\u2019s my decision to march proudly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams, who also attended the parade every year of his administration and earned his own cheers for his presence Sunday, trolled Mamdani in an X video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when antisemitism is rising across our country and Jewish New Yorkers are facing hatred, intimidation and attacks at unprecedented levels, you cannot afford silence,\u201d Adams said in a video.<\/p>\n<p>A parade-goer shouted as Adams started marching, \u201cThe real mayor is here, Mr. Adams!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Mayor Eric Adams is warmly greeted at the popular event. Aristide Economopoulos for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Yoav, 59, of the Lower East Side yelled, \u201cWe miss you, Mayor Adams!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No-Show Zo meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/18\/us-news\/jewish-leaders-snub-mamdani-jewish-heritage-event-over-his-anti-israel-stance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spent his morning<\/a> on a call-in radio show gushing about how much he loves the job and can\u2019t wait to run for a second term \u2014 just months into his first term and more than three years from the next mayoral election.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani then went out for a leisurely Sunday afternoon bike ride, bizarrely wearing a white collared dress shirt, black suit and dress shoes as he peddled around \u2014 without a helmet.<\/p>\n<p>A proud participant enjoys the parade. Aristide Economopoulos for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Helmets are required for bicycle-riders under age 14 and strongly recommended by Mamdani\u2019s administration \u2014 which encouraged their use just last month with a slew of free-helmet giveaways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA safe bike ride is a good bike ride,\u201d Mamdani <a href=\"http:\/\/\u2019 https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2026\/04\/mamdani-administration-celebrates-2026-spring-cycling-season-wit\" rel=\"nofollow\">said in a city press release<\/a> touting the event. \u201cSafe cycling starts with the right gear, like a well-fit helmet.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The mayor, who is Muslim and has long been a vocal critic of Israel \u2014 supporting the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement the country and not recognizing it as the Jewish state \u2014 has made no secret of the fact he wasn\u2019t showing up to Sunday\u2019s parade.<\/p>\n<p>Many families are among the parade-goers. Yoav Ginsburg for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I will not be attending the Israel Day Parade, my lack of attendance should not be mistaken for a refusal to provide security or the necessary permits for its safety,\u201d he told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been very clear: I believe in equal rights for all people \u2014 everywhere. That principle guides me consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blakeman, the GOP hopeful for governor in November, told The Post on Sunday, \u201cI\u2019m glad he\u2019s not here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need a wolf in sheep\u2019s clothing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u2019s conspicuous snub of the unifying parade <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/30\/opinion\/mayor-mamdani-boycotting-the-israel-day-parade-is-a-badge-of-dishonor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is a staggering break with tradition<\/a> and might be the first time a city mayor has skipped the parade since its 1964 inception.<\/p>\n<p>But in a history-making precedent from another prominent Muslim, interfaith activist Anila Ali, founder of the American Muslim &amp; Multifaith Women\u2019s Empowerment Council,<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/30\/us-news\/muslim-interfaith-activist-marching-in-sundays-israel-parade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> led the first-ever <\/a>Muslim group to march in the parade.<\/p>\n<p>Ali and the group walked tall along 5th Avenue despite being hit with threats and intimidation tactics at every turn, from random phone calls warning them to wear bulletproof vests to lefty loon city Councilwoman Shahana Hanif saying she hoped pro-Israel Muslim organizers like Ali be condemned \u201cto Jahannam\u201d \u2014 the Islamic equivalent of hell.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich (center) and Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofir Sofer (left of center) march at the Celebrate Israel Parade. Lone Pine Press for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>All in all, Mamdani\u2019s absence didn\u2019t seem to put a damper on other attendees, who told The Post they\u2019d rather not see him there, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s disgusting, and it\u2019s better off that he\u2019s not here. That tells you everything you need to know,\u201d she said, adding he hasn\u2019t showed an \u201counce of support for the Jewish people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hedy Aldima, of Brooklyn, who wore a t shirt reading \u201cF\u2013k Mamdani,\u201d said, First of all, we don\u2019t want him here. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need him here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In what is almost certainly a low blow, she compared the Democratic Socialist mayor to one of his most least-liked predecessors to emphasize her distaste for his administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one time I thought [Bill] DeBlasio was the worst mayor. This guy makes him look like a cupcake,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeBlasio was the worst mayor there ever was of time.
