{"id":836891,"date":"2026-06-01T13:41:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T13:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/836891\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T13:41:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T13:41:11","slug":"scotlands-ex-leader-says-estranged-husband-betrayed-her-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/836891\/","title":{"rendered":"Scotland&#8217;s ex-leader says estranged husband betrayed her trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Scotland\u2019s former First Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/nicola-sturgeon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicola Sturgeon<\/a> defiantly rejected any blame Sunday for her estranged husband\u2019s embezzlement of Scottish National Party funds, saying she wouldn\u2019t apologize for his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Sturgeon told the BBC that she felt betrayed by the actions of her husband, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/scotland-embezzlement-murrell-sturgeon-94dd4f5705fd11e31d6c21b6514f01cd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Murrell, who last week<\/a> pleaded guilty to stealing more than 400,000 pounds ($540,000) from the SNP to fund a lavish lifestyle when he was the party\u2019s chief executive. She consistently denied having any knowledge of his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not responsible for the crimes that my former husband committed,\u2019\u2019 she told the BBC. \u201cI\u2019m not going to apologize for somebody else\u2019s crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sturgeon\u2019s comments came as she pushed back against widespread disbelief about her previous statements that she knew nothing about Murrell\u2019s crimes. The case has heightened concerns about the accountability of U.K. politicians after a series of scandals that has eroded trust in government at all levels.<\/p>\n<p>Many critics have also questioned why Murrell was allowed to remain chief executive of the SNP after Sturgeon became party leader in 2014. (Jane Barlow\/PA via AP)\"  width=\"599\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780321271_597_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, with hindsight, I wish that I could go back and take a different decision,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Murrell\u2019s plea capped a five-year police investigation of the SNP, which has led Scotland\u2019s semiautonomous government for almost two decades <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elections-london-united-kingdom-england-c0ccc19b969302fd8a6e1fa2838a894b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">while campaigning for the country to break away<\/a> from the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Turmoil within the SNP exploded in 2023, as questions swirled about the party\u2019s finances and dwindling membership numbers. <\/p>\n<p>Sturgeon led the Scottish government for almost a decade but <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nicola-sturgeon-northern-ireland-edinburgh-scotland-7facdaedd9561554c5b390027c63177c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">abruptly resigned<\/a> as first minister in February 2023. Observers were bewildered by her statement at the time that she knew in her \u201chead and in my heart\u201d that it was the right time to go. <\/p>\n<p>The following month, Murrell quit his job after two decades as SNP chief executive and took responsibility for misleading the news media about the collapse in party membership.
