Jared Polis, a Democrat, commuted <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tina-peters-election-computer-breach-8a171657321dd595dfd2dd81e0a0a848\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peters\u2019 sentence<\/a> last month following pressure from President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p>The Colorado Department of Corrections would not confirm the time of Peters\u2019 release, and a representative for her attorney said Peters would not speak to the media when she is freed. <\/p>\n<p>Peters was the first local election official to be charged with breaching security after the 2020 election. She snuck in an outside computer expert affiliated with My Pillow Chief Executive Mike Lindell \u2014 who himself <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fox-news-dominion-lawsuit-settlement-election-lies-fda05a63a1af8a111ce1efba024b88a0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">denied that Trump lost the White House<\/a> in 2020 \u2014 and the person copied the county\u2019s Dominion Voting Systems computer server as it was updated in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Peters then joined <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tina-peters-colorado-clerk-election-conspiracy-ddc433ca603cf9bce5f92f9449606e40\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lindell<\/a> onstage at a \u201ccybersymposium\u201d that promised to reveal proof that the election was rigged. Video and photos of the computer system upgrade, including passwords, were posted online. The move stoked <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-michael-pence-electoral-college-elections-health-2d9bd47a8bd3561682ac46c6b3873a10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">false claims<\/a> that voting machines were manipulated to steal <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-claims-biden-won-explained-bd53b14ce871412b462cb3fe2c563f18\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the election<\/a> from Trump. <\/p>\n<p>Peters was convicted in 2024 of attempting to influence a public servant, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, violation of duty and other crimes by jurors in Mesa County, a Republican stronghold that supported Trump. An appeals court upheld her conviction in April, but ordered Peters to be resentenced because it said the judge who sent her to prison wrongly punished her for speaking out about election fraud. <\/p>\n<p>Trump had championed Peters\u2019 case, but because the 70-year-old was convicted under state law, he did not have the power to pardon her. Instead, the president pressured Polis to do so, lambasting him on social media and disinviting him to a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-wes-moore-kevin-stitt-governors-dinner-58d6381ed18334e8c35af35ef2ce4122\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">White House meeting<\/a> with other governors. The Trump administration also announced plans to dismantle the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/ncar.ucar.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/a> in Colorado and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/space-command-trump-colorado-alabama-5f02f8b45b212be6ebf6f7a2f448dd87\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relocated<\/a> the U.S. Space Command to Alabama. <\/p>\n<p>Polis commuted Peters\u2019 sentence on May 15.
