{"id":83713,"date":"2025-07-22T17:12:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T17:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83713\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T17:12:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T17:12:16","slug":"ben-shelton-says-who-he-thinks-is-the-best-mixed-doubles-player-in-the-world-by-a-distance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83713\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Shelton says who he thinks is the best mixed doubles player in the world by a distance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe have fallen just short of a memorable opening doubles win at the Citi Open in Washington DC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/ben-shelton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shelton<\/a> and Tiafoe created huge excitement among fans with their partnership, taking on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/atp-mubadala-citi-dc-open-2025-preview-who-is-playing-when-prize-money-and-full-schedule\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Open<\/a> doubles event together.<\/p>\n<p>But the Americans were sent crashing back down to earth in front of their home fans by John Peers and Matthew Ebden.<\/p>\n<p>The highly experienced pair, who won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, secured a 7-6(7-3), 6-3 victory.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/how-the-atp-top-10-rankings-look-after-the-wimbledon-final-with-new-spots-for-taylor-fritz-and-ben-shelton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shelton rejoined the ATP top 10<\/a> after Wimbledon, having made it to the quarterfinals before falling to Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2223404971-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Ben Shelton of United States of America during Day Eight of The Championships Wimbledon 2025 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.\" class=\"wp-image-110405\" \/>Photo by Marleen Fouchier\/BSR Agency\/Getty ImagesBen Shelton names the best mixed doubles player in the world \u2018hands down\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But he wasn\u2019t able to take that momentum into Washington DC on the doubles court, although he has a shot at redemption in singles.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP<\/a> number eight did, however, discuss his doubles career ahead of the event, having been told he and his playing partner Taylor Townsend are \u2018pretty clear overdogs\u2019 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> mixed doubles title.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/the-world-number-one-doubles-player-now-says-if-she-thinks-she-will-be-selected-to-play-at-the-us-open-mixed-event\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The world number one doubles player now says if she thinks she will be selected to play at the US Open mixed event<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shelton replied: \u201cYeah, I don\u2019t know about that. Got some big hitters in there. But yeah, we\u2019re both from Atlanta. We have known each other, been friends since I have been out on tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we made a semis run at the US Open. Personally, if I wasn\u2019t still in the singles, we probably would have had a good shot at taking that title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, she\u2019s the best mixed doubles player in the world, hands down. And she\u2019s who I think I have a chance to win it with. It should be a lot of fun. We enjoy ourselves. We compete hard. But, you know, we clown out there also.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s a big prize. I forget what the prize money is for the tournament, but I feel like it\u2019s ridiculous. It\u2019s a mill? It\u2019s like every tournament of the year there is other tournaments that are sick, that they\u2019re cool, but for me just can\u2019t compare, because that energy is not there when you\u2019re driving from the city to the site or, you know, getting ready to walk out on Arthur Ashe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, there is no feeling like it. That\u2019s my personal opinion.
