With each subsequent year, Overwatch\u2019s annual Pride Month event has filled out more of its queer characters\u2019 lives and identities. After years of not being featured in any of the seasonal stories, Lifeweaver<\/a>, my support main and a pansexual king, is finally getting a bit of the spotlight. Sadly, it may have killed a years-long fan theory<\/a> that Blizzard would spark a romance between him and ex-Talon mercenary Baptiste, but it did give the plant-based healer a new beau.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Pride Month story is essentially a team-up comic for Lifeweaver and Venture<\/a>, Overwatch\u2019s non-binary archaeologist. \u201cThe Deep-Sea Deception\u201d brings them together at the Atlantic Arcology, where Lifeweaver conducts his research. The two are accompanied by a new character named Dr. Palak Nathani, who is Lifeweaver\u2019s assistant. As the group goes diving for artifacts, Venture and Palak bond a bit over their shared they\/them pronouns, and Venture also catches onto the fact that Palak very clearly has a crush on Lifeweaver, though they\u2019re hesitant to do anything about it because their research is too important to get tangled up in feelings.<\/p>\n

However, once Talon operative Domina shows up looking for Lifeweaver, the team experiences a near-death experience that puts things into perspective. And gosh, they\u2019re super cute together. You can watch the whole thing narrated by Venture voice actor Valeria Rodriguez.<\/p>\n

Obviously, I\u2019m thrilled Lifeweaver is finally getting some love after having been mostly pushed to the background of Overwatch lore, and I\u2019m also glad he\u2019s got a sexy piece of arm candy now. But I, like many others, had really latched onto the Lifeweaver and Baptiste ship when the latter\u2019s bisexuality was finally revealed through a flirty interaction<\/a> back when Lifeweaver first joined Overwatch\u2019s roster in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the cute banter, Baptiste and Lifeweaver have never actually met up in any of the Overwatch lore, so maybe this was just the more sensible narrative road to go down. I imagine that\u2019s not going to go over well with those who have shipped them for years, though, especially after Blizzard finally made good on Ana and Reinhardt\u2019s similar slowburn romance<\/a>. Thus far, all the canonical queer pairings have been with NPCs, rather than the heroes you can play in-game. Maybe Blizzard is planning on following through on some of the flirty moments between Bap and Sombra since they have stronger ties in the actual story of Overwatch?<\/p>\n

Overwatch\u2019s first Pride event was in 2023<\/a>, and included a lore drop revealing Baptiste and Pharah were both queer, added in-game Pride cosmetics, and turned the game\u2019s Midtown map into the setting of a Pride parade. Since then, Blizzard has released annual stories starring its queer characters, including last year\u2019s Soldier: 76 short story<\/a> that made good on a years-long promise of expanding on the old man\u2019s angsty romantic history with a man named Vincent.\u00a0<\/p>\n
