{"id":83820,"date":"2025-07-22T18:06:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T18:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83820\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T18:06:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T18:06:12","slug":"san-antonio-wants-army-jobs-relocated-from-alabama-maryland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83820\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio wants Army jobs relocated from Alabama, Maryland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facing the prospect of U.S. Army job losses at Fort Sam Houston, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is lobbying for positions in other states to be relocated to San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Administration is in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/May\/01\/2003702281\/-1\/-1\/1\/ARMY-TRANSFORMATION-AND-ACQUISITION-REFORM.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">restructuring the service branch,<\/a> with plans to combine two San Antonio-based commands, both located at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, and the North Carolina-based Forces Command at Fort Bragg, into a single headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Army leadership\u2019s preliminary recommendations are to move about 200 San Antonio-based soldiers to Fort Bragg \u2014 while roughly 750 positions would remain here, according to Jones\u2019 office.<\/p>\n<p>Jones said on Thursday that she presented U.S. Army leaders and Texas\u2019 U.S. Senators <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Honorable-Ted-Cruz-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">with a list of missions<\/a> that could be \u201cripe for relocation\u201d in place of the lost jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Navigating the potential job losses posed by the Army restructure is an early test for Jones, who previously served as the Under Secretary of the Air Force under the Biden Administration and held a number of high-level military positions that have given her tremendous insight on the potential restructure.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s also campaigned hard as a Democrat, and has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and the Republican administration pushing the current changes.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/gina-ortiz-jones-army-soldiers-out-of-san-antonio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">traveled to Washington, D.C.<\/a>, to make her case to Pentagon leaders tasked with the reorganization, as well as Texas\u2019 Republican leaders on Capitol Hill who could influence the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to use my background, and what I know, and certainly my network to ensure that we are as proactive as we can be,\u201d Jones said in an interview Thursday. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753207572_680_Brenda-Bazan-mayoral-debate-2025-18-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5410203\"  \/>Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is urging military leaders to move additional missions to San Antonio, as some jobs appear likely to leave the city in the Trump Administration\u2019s U.S. Army realignment. Credit: Brenda Baz\u00e1n \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>The idea of Army jobs leaving the state has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/news\/article\/cuellar-hegseth-san-antonio-army-commands-merger-20372908.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">alarmed Texas lawmakers<\/a>, who have limited leverage to stop it as they await a formal announcement in the coming weeks.  Jones said that Texas\u2019 U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, both Republicans, had been good partners on working to keep positions in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need a target list, and we can most help ourselves if we can be very specific,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter shared with the San Antonio Report, Jones suggested that San Antonio could potentially absorb some positions currently located at the <a href=\"https:\/\/acc.army.mil\/contractingcenters\/acc-rsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Army Contracting Command<\/a> at Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama, which handles contracts and acquisitions for the branch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already got a subordinate command related to contracting,\u201d Jones told the Report. \u201cThat major headquarters is in a place where I know that they\u2019re busting at the seams at their current location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also suggested moving medical missions, including some from the Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), which is headquartered at Fort Detrick\u00a0in Maryland, to allow the Army to \u201ctap into [San Antonio\u2019s] world-class medical footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another suggestion was to put some \u201csupporting elements\u201d of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, which is located in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., closer to the Army\u2019s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in Austin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustin and San Antonio can well support the quality-of-service and quality-of-life<br \/>factors important for soldiers and civilians supporting these missions,\u201d Jones wrote.<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio and Bexar County leaders had already been <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/san-antonio-woos-defense-health-agency-at-military-medical-conference-velocitytx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">angling to recruit jobs<\/a> from the Defense Health Agency (DHA) in Falls Church, Va., including <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/south-beach-project-defense-health-agency-fort-sam-houston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">arranging potential facilities <\/a>at Fort Sam Houston.<\/p>\n<p>Such relocations are quite sensitive since jobs and local investments are on the line \u2014 as evidenced by DHA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/business\/article\/dha-in-sa-18424117.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">overall defensiveness<\/a> about the idea back in 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Facing the prospect of U.S. Army job losses at Fort Sam Houston, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is lobbying&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":83821,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5133],"tags":[5229,69,47731,7452,40657,23008,56891,7202,7203,358,7453,4352,3187,7815,41360,67,586,132,5230,68,2969,7819],"class_list":{"0":"post-83820","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-antonio","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-donald-trump","10":"tag-fort-sam-houston","11":"tag-gina-ortiz-jones","12":"tag-jbsa","13":"tag-joint-base-san-antonio","14":"tag-joint-base-san-antonio-fort-sam-houston","15":"tag-san-antonio","16":"tag-sanantonio","17":"tag-texas","18":"tag-top-story","19":"tag-trump-administration","20":"tag-tx","21":"tag-typedaily","22":"tag-u-s-army","23":"tag-united-states","24":"tag-united-states-of-america","25":"tag-unitedstates","26":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","27":"tag-us","28":"tag-usa","29":"tag-wc-500-750"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/114898218866314155","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83820","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=83820"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83820\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/83821"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=83820"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=83820"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=83820"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
