{"id":838501,"date":"2026-06-02T06:21:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T06:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/838501\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T06:21:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T06:21:15","slug":"grimes-county-prepares-for-critical-vote-on-spacex-chip-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/838501\/","title":{"rendered":"Grimes County prepares for critical vote on SpaceX chip plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">GRIMES COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) &#8211; Grimes County officials will hold a public hearing on Wednesday on SpaceX\u2019s proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2026\/05\/13\/terafab-could-transform-grimes-countys-economy-experts-say\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2026\/05\/13\/terafab-could-transform-grimes-countys-economy-experts-say\/\">Terafab chip manufacturing plant near Gibbons Creek Reservoir<\/a>, with billions of dollars in potential investment on the line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">County Judge Joe Fauth said Tuesday\u2019s special meeting will continue last week\u2019s discussion ahead of Wednesday\u2019s public hearing. The public will have a chance to speak at both of the meetings this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI\u2019d like to put this to bed on Wednesday,\u201d Judge Fauth said. \u201cSpaceX can then start digging dirt and doing what they need to do to build their operation. Or we just say, you know what? We can\u2019t come to it, and we don\u2019t have an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2026\/05\/05\/grimes-county-hold-public-hearing-proposed-spacex-tax-abatement-tied-massive-new-facility\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2026\/05\/05\/grimes-county-hold-public-hearing-proposed-spacex-tax-abatement-tied-massive-new-facility\/\">The project is a multi-phase semiconductor and advanced computing facility with the potential for massive investment in the county.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThis is a big deal. At the end of the day, this is a generational change for Grimes County, if indeed it does go through,\u201d Fauth said.<\/p>\n<p>County officials weigh future development<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Fauth said allowing SpaceX to move to Grimes County could sway other companies from coming to town because he doesn\u2019t want the county to be overrun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIn the back of my head, maybe we could limit some of the anxiety of our citizens by not having five, ten, 15 data centers, battery locations, power generations throughout the county,\u201d Fauth said. \u201cMaybe we could just have one or two majors, and then we could go back to the comfort of, hey, Grimes County is a nice place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents raise safety concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Grimes County resident Marie Egyed said she is not opposed to the project but wants the county to slow down and give residents a seat at the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThat would be great if this were the only project that came into Grimes County,\u201d Egyed said. \u201cI\u2019m not asking them to do anything except follow their own adopted guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Egyed said residents are still waiting for answers about safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe county still has not provided the residents with proof that these developments even meet the county\u2019s own criteria regarding safety, health, and hazards,\u201d Egyed said. \u201cWe\u2019re still waiting for them to show us the information that they\u2019ve actually looked into whether these are going to be harmful to our health and our safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Wednesday\u2019s meeting includes two public hearings \u2014 one on the tax abatement, one on the reinvestment zone \u2014 plus open public comment. Egyed said she wants residents at the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe want to make sure we get it right this first time, especially with this very large project here, so that all the other ones that follow, plans are in place, processes are being followed, procedures, the rules, the guidelines, the criteria, everything is in line with what they\u2019ve already adopted,\u201d Egyed said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Fauth said even if the county acts on Wednesday, SpaceX still has the final call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe have the semi-final word. We\u2019re going to offer this tax abatement. This is what we\u2019re proposing. And then SpaceX would also have the opportunity to say, \u2018We\u2019re going to come in, or we\u2019re not coming in,\u2019\u201d Fauth said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Residents can make their voice heard at Tuesday\u2019s commissioners court meeting before commissioners head into executive session. The formal public hearings and action will happen on Wednesday at the Grimes County Justice Center at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 KBTX.
