{"id":838645,"date":"2026-06-02T07:52:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/838645\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T07:52:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:52:17","slug":"as-ebola-spreads-scientists-race-to-find-vaccines-and-treatments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/838645\/","title":{"rendered":"As Ebola Spreads, Scientists Race to Find Vaccines and Treatments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/17\/world\/africa\/ebola-congo-uganda-who-public-health-emergency.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Ebola outbreak<\/a> spreads in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, health workers are rushing to provide supportive care, hoping that some patients will <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/democratic-republic-of-congo\/news\/four-health-workers-recover-ebola-democratic-republic-congo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">recover on their own<\/a>, while <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/30\/world\/africa\/ebola-epicenter-congo.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">isolating the sick<\/a> and tracing contacts of the infected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Missing from the fight? Vaccines and drugs that might stop the virus. Dismayed by the scale of the burgeoning epidemic, scientists are scrambling to find them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On Monday, two major nonprofit vaccine organizations announced tens of millions of dollars of funding to develop vaccines. Experts from the World Health Organization have also recommended testing a handful of monoclonal antibodies and other drugs as potential treatments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Researchers said that it would take months find out whether these measures work. But the treatments will probably still be valuable at that point, because the outbreak is likely to continue raging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to take a long, committed response to bring this outbreak under control,\u201d said Richard Hatchett, the chief executive of CEPI, a nonprofit that supports the development of vaccines and other pandemic countermeasures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">One reason that Ebola disease is so hard to fight is that it is not caused by a single kind of virus. When scientists refer to \u201cEbola virus,\u201d they mean a species first discovered in 1976, in what was then Zaire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Since then, researchers have identified five other species of viruses in the same genus, including one called <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/27\/science\/ebola-hantavirus-species-strains.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bundibugyo virus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Like Ebola virus, Bundibugyo virus causes Ebola disease \u2014 producing symptoms such as sudden fevers, muscle pain and vomiting. The infection can lead to uncontrolled bleeding and rapid organ failure, killing a substantial fraction of patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Bundibugyo virus is responsible for the current outbreak of Ebola disease. Before now, it had caused only two small outbreaks since its emergence in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Most of the outbreaks of Ebola disease over the last 50 years have been caused by Ebola virus. As a result, there are two licensed treatments and one vaccine specifically for it, and nothing specifically for Bundibugyo virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">These two species of viruses split from a common ancestor long ago \u2014 probably millions of years ago \u2014 and have been evolving in different directions ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">So maybe it\u2019s no surprise that doctors were confused when patients started coming to clinics in Africa with symptoms of Ebola in April. Diagnostic tests were designed to recognize genetic sequences from the more common Ebola virus. Doctors are just now gaining access to tests that can detect Bundibugyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Evolution has altered the molecules, known as glycoproteins, that stud the surfaces of these two viruses. Both species use glycoproteins to latch onto cells and slip inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">When people become infected with either virus, their immune systems start making antibodies that stick to these glycoproteins and block the viruses from infecting cells. If this immune response is strong enough, people can recover from Ebola disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">To make a vaccine, scientists looked for a way to train the immune system to make those antibodies. Erbevo, the licensed vaccine, consists of a harmless virus, known as VSV, engineered to carry Ebola virus glycoproteins that prompt the production of protective antibodies. In 2014 trials, the vaccine <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/22\/health\/ebola-vaccine.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provided 100 percent protection<\/a> against Ebola virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But experts doubt that it will provide strong protection against the Bundibugyo virus. About a third of the building blocks in Bundibugyo glycoproteins differ from those carried by Ebola virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s just different enough on the surface that your immune system finds it to be a different thing,\u201d said Erica Ollmann Saphire, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">To halt the current outbreak, doctors would need to give people a vaccine proven to work specifically against Bundibugyo virus. That doesn\u2019t yet exist, even though scientists have been researching the species since it was first discovered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">That\u2019s the gap that CEPI is hoping to help fill. The group will offer up to $61 million to prepare three candidate vaccines for clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">IAVI, a nonprofit organization that develops vaccines, will receive up to $3.2 million for a VSV-based vaccine. The group already has experience in creating these vaccines for other viruses, including Sudan virus, another species that has caused Ebola disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Another reason to try this approach is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0002600\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">a 2014 study<\/a> in which scientists tried out a VSV vaccine against Bundibugyo virus on monkeys. It provided 100 percent protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">While VSV vaccines have a long track record, they have a downside: Scientists have to grow the carrier viruses to make the vaccines, a process that can take several months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A second vaccine is being developed at the University of Oxford, based on a different viral vector called an adenovirus. In 2020, the Oxford team used these adenoviruses to create <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/health\/oxford-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Covid vaccine<\/a> manufactured by AstraZeneca, which is estimated to have saved over six million lives in the first year of their use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The researchers have made vaccines for other pathogens, including Sudan virus. \u201cIn essence, we are building on what we have done before,\u201d said Teresa Lambe, who is leading the Bundibugyo effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">CEPI has awarded Dr. Lambe\u2019s team up to $8.6 million to develop an adenovirus vaccine carrying Bundibugyo glycoproteins. The vaccine is already being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Thanks to the institute\u2019s manufacturing capacity and the speed at which adenoviruses grow, the researchers say they could have vaccines ready for clinical trials in humans in one to two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But the Oxford researchers have never tested an adenovirus vaccine against Bundibugyo virus in animals before. So they\u2019ll also have to carry out those studies in the months to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">CEPI is also awarding up to $50 million to Boston-based Moderna to create an mRNA vaccine for Bundibugyo. Moderna produced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/health\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the two authorized mRNA vaccines for Covid<\/a> during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The company has investigated mRNA vaccines for a wide variety of other diseases. In 2018, Alexander Bukreyev, a virologist at the University of Texas, and his colleagues <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29281112\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that a Moderna mRNA vaccine provided guinea pigs with 100 percent protection from Ebola virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Moderna\u2019s mRNA vaccines deliver instructions to our own cells to make proteins that cause the immune system to produce antibodies. To make a vaccine for the current outbreak, scientists are creating new mRNA molecules that will lead to the production of Budingbugyo glycoproteins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Like adenovirus vaccines, mRNA vaccines can be produced quickly. CEPI will support Moderna\u2019s manufacturing of enough doses for a large-scale clinical trial, should it prove safe in smaller studies. \u201cIn terms of rapid development of a real countermeasure, this is the best step CEPI could take,\u201d Dr. Bukreyev said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Gavi, another vaccine nonprofit, also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/news\/media-room\/gavi-commits-us-50-million-bundibugyo-ebolavirus-vaccines-and-outbreak-response\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> on Friday that it would provide $40 million to support the manufacture of leading Bundibugyo vaccine candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">There is already an effective treatment for people battling infections of Ebola virus. Doctors can inject high doses of especially potent types of antibodies, known as monoclonal antibodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">As it turns out, some of those monoclonal antibodies can also cling to the glycoproteins on Bundibugyo viruses. On Thursday, a panel of experts convened by the W.H.O. recommended that two monoclonal antibodies go into clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">One, called maftimivab, is part of a three-antibody cocktail manufactured by Regeneron. The other, MBP-134, is an experimental drug developed by the San Diego-based company Mapp Bio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In 2017, researchers <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.cell.2017.04.037\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">discovered<\/a> a pair of antibodies from survivors of an outbreak of the Ebola virus. Remarkably, these antibodies can also bind tightly to glycoproteins on Bundibugyo and on Sudan virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The researchers then went on to test MBP-134 in animals. It cured mice and guinea pigs of lethal infections of Ebola virus. That success led to a preliminary clinical trials that demonstrated that the antibodies are safe for people to receive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But Mapp Bio has yet to run studies to show that MPB-134 cures animals, let alone people, of Bundibugyo virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Dr. James Crowe, a virologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center who has developed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/about-us\/aamc-awards\/distinguished-research\/2023-crowe\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">monoclonal antibodies against Covid<\/a> and other diseases, questioned the decision to focus on these particular treatments. \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re ideal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Dr. Crowe and his colleagues <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/fulltext\/S0092-8674(15)01686-4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> extremely potent antibodies in blood samples from survivors of the first Bundibugyo outbreak in 2007. In a 2018 study, the scientists found that injecting the antibodies into monkeys provided them with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jid\/article\/218\/suppl_5\/S565\/5049157?login=false\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">100 percent protection<\/a> against the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But Dr. Crowe has not been able to get funding to move the antibodies forward to the point that they could go into clinical trials. \u201cI\u2019ve fielded a lot of calls, but nobody has licensed them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The world would be better prepared for outbreaks of pathogens like Bundibugyo if scientists could push forward research when there isn\u2019t a public health emergency raging, Dr. Saphire said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">And rather than try to make vaccines and drugs that work only against the pathogen that\u2019s suddenly killing people, researchers could look for treatments that are effective against many related species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s straightforward to do,\u201d she said. \u201cIt just takes leadership, will, and the funding to do clinical studies.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As the Ebola outbreak spreads in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, health workers are rushing to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":838646,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[11],"tags":[7779,116152,3738,32326,327357,23345,310283,162276,48734,210,40513,11229,23839,24088,69142,1183,343609,343608,67,132,68,162489],"class_list":["post-838645","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-africa","tag-antibodies","tag-clinical-trials","tag-congo","tag-democratic-republic-of-congo-kinshasa","tag-disease-rates","tag-drugs-pharmaceuticals","tag-epidemics","tag-gavi","tag-health","tag-immune-system","tag-medicine-and-health","tag-moderna-inc","tag-oxford-university","tag-regeneron-pharmaceuticals-inc","tag-research","tag-serum-institute-of-india","tag-the-vaccine-alliance","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us","tag-vaccination-and-immunization"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/116679432457024418","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/838645","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=838645"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/838645\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/838646"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=838645"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=838645"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=838645"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
