But you barely heard about it during the mayoral primary.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not referring to criminal homicides, which last year <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/los-angeles-sees-lowest-number-of-homicides-in-60-years\/?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">dipped to their lowest tally in 60 years<\/a>, but an even deadlier menace.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers and their cars kill a lot of people in this city. You\u2019d think someone running to unseat an incumbent would mention this: L.A.\u2019s streets have never been more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians than under Mayor Karen Bass.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Because for the third straight year, traffic deaths outnumbered murders in the City of Angels, the latter which have continue to fall, despite perceptions fueled by the news media.<\/p>\n<p>And the former are far worse now than when the city adopted, and promptly ignored, Vision Zero a decade ago.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This public safety discordance played out conspicuously at the most high-profile candidate forums. The May 6 NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8rI3A6alVHM&amp;ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">debate<\/a> opened with a jarring montage set to scary music that showed (no joke!) hooded marauders, shotgun-wielding cops and people saying things like \u201cI don\u2019t sleep well at night at all.\u201d The ensuing exchange between Bass and her main challengers, Spencer Pratt and City Councilmember Nithya Raman, featured memorable utterances on <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenstatereport.substack.com\/p\/karen-bass-wants-california-to-pick?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">trash<\/a>, \u201csuper meth\u201d (which <a href=\"https:\/\/samquinones.substack.com\/p\/methamphetamine-finally-enters-a?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">may<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2026-05-13\/super-meth-los-angeles-homelessness-mayoral-campaign?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">may not<\/a> exist) and the \u201cthousands\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/news\/why-some-los-angeles-moms-are-backing-spencer-pratt-in-his-bid-for-la-mayor?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">moms<\/a> who\u2019ve talked to Pratt about not feeling safe.<\/p>\n<p>But not one of the candidates mentioned the hazard that Angelenos have good reason to worry about: Getting killed by a speeding vehicle while driving to work, walking to the park or out for a relaxing bike ride.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Streets Are For Everyone and People\u2019s Vision Zero have been pressing city officials to declare a traffic violence state of emergency in Los Angeles, and are preparing to send a letter to that effect when they get it up to 1,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Wait, <a href=\"https:\/\/ujoin.co\/campaigns\/4275\/actions\/public?action_id=6456\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">you have signed it<\/a>, right?<\/p>\n<p>But even with that, and the failure of Vision Zero and former Mayor Eric Garcetti\u2019s Green New Deal \u2014 let alone the coming World Cup and \u201928 LA Olympics \u2014 no one is even talking about the lack of action improving city streets.<\/p>\n<p>Or paving them.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what led to the passage of Measure HLA two years ago, when two-thirds of city voters mandated that the city build out the already-approved Mobility Plan.<\/p>\n<p>And you know how that went.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of complying with the law by following the Mobility Plan when a significant amount of work is done on any city street, they simply stopped almost all street work.<\/p>\n<p>Then the city invented the term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ujoin.co\/campaigns\/4275\/actions\/public?action_id=6456\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large asphalt repair<\/a>\u201d to get around complying with the law, as well as the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lareported.substack.com\/p\/la-pothole-budget-crisis\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">condition of our roads continues to get worse.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"480\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Penny wise, Pothole Foolish. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the city\u2019s own measurements, 60% of its streets were in good condition a year ago. Now it\u2019s 53%.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s crumbling roads lay bare the costs of the city\u2019s addiction to band-aid budgeting.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/H6H9Z1xjvL\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/H6H9Z1xjvL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Streets For All (@streetsforall) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/streetsforall\/status\/2061482947090538676?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 1, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, according to Thornton,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/city\/artesia-boulevard-construction-complete-street-bike-lanes\/?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Long Beach<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santamonica.gov\/blog\/broadway-safety-improvements-underway?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Monica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/la.streetsblog.org\/2024\/05\/13\/eyes-on-the-street-glendales-brand-boulevard-complete-streets-project?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Glendale<\/a> and other cities rooted in the same car culture as L.A. are at least trying to address the problem by adding infrastructure to protect cyclists and pedestrians from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/features\/why-americas-roads-keep-getting-deadlier-safety-research?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">bigger, faster and deadlier<\/a> vehicles. South Pasadena is <a href=\"https:\/\/la.streetsblog.org\/2026\/05\/15\/south-pasadena-approves-complete-streets-concept-for-huntington-drive?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">re-working Huntington Drive, one of its most dangerous roads<\/a>, and South El Monte has made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activesgv.org\/post\/south-el-monte-celebrates-grand-opening-of-merced-avenue-greenways-south-end?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">numerous upgrades<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/la.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/23\/eyes-on-the-street-south-el-montes-safe-routes-to-school-improvements?ref=golden-state.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">last few years<\/a> to protect non-drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Angelenos wait for the progress they overwhelmingly demanded in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, we\u2019ll continue to wait.<\/p>\n<p>Unless we all demand that whoever makes it to the November runoff addresses the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The first step is signing that letter.<\/p>\n<p>The next is attending candidate forums, debates and open houses, and not letting them leave until they tell you exactly what they intend to do to bring traffic deaths and serious injuries down, too.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/givebutter.com\/spring-2026-member-drive-34602e?ref=golden-state.org\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">donate to Golden State today<\/a> to support local, independent news.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>A new bipartisan omnibus bike bill sponsored by the co-chairs of the Congressional Bike Caucus, California Democrat Mike Thompson and Florida Republican Vern Buchanan, hopes to improve and expand bicycling in the US.<\/p>\n<p>According <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrepublic.com\/news\/legislation-to-bolster-cyclist-safety-bring-bike-manufacturing-back-to-us\/article_822dadb6-7996-4c7d-b8ee-e59e6a0618d3.html\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the Fairfield CA Daily Republic<\/a>, HR 9041 The America Bikes Act,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Improves cyclist safety by expanding access to federal funding for local governments to improve roadway safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. It would help local, regional, and tribal governments to fund safety action plans and infrastructure projects aimed at preventing roadway fatalities and serious injuries. It makes bike safety education a standard part of youth learning nationwide and expands access to funding for on-bicycle education to elementary and secondary school students.<\/li>\n<li>Encourages more people to bike by improving access to programs that help kids safely bike and walk to school. It expands biking and walking infrastructure on federal lands. It reauthorizes federal funding for communities to plan, design and build walking and biking infrastructure. It expands incentives so more Americans switch to bicycle commuting. It creates a grant program to connect biking and transit stations, including supporting bike parking at transit stations and expansion of bikeshare programs.<\/li>\n<li class=\"subscriber-only\">Brings bike manufacturing back to our shores by creating incentives to manufacture bikes in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Good luck with that last one.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s worth keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>Although I don\u2019t have a lot of faith in anything getting out of this Congress. Or an administration that has already doubled down on highway funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Sad news from San Luis Obispo County, where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanluisobispo.com\/news\/local\/article315964696.html\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">64-year old Long Beach resident was identified as the victim killed by a driver<\/a> while riding his bicycle near Edna Valley last month.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory Koch died following the May 20th collision at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Tiffany+Ranch+Rd+%26+Orcutt+Rd,+California+93401\/@35.1919303,-120.5633672,16z\/data=!4m16!1m9!3m8!1s0x80ec5f88c04dee25:0x65f4eea38a8125e7!2sTiffany+Ranch+Rd+%26+Orcutt+Rd,+California+93401!3b1!8m2!3d35.191927!4d-120.5608489!10e5!16s%2Fg%2F11f313g3yy!3m5!1s0x80ec5f88c04dee25:0x65f4eea38a8125e7!8m2!3d35.191927!4d-120.5608489!16s%2Fg%2F11f313g3yy?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDUyNy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orcutt and Tiffany Ranch roads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still no word on how the crash occurred, nor any mention of his death in the Long Beach media.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you need a good laugh, <a href=\"https:\/\/bikeshare.metro.net\/worldcup2026\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metro Bike Share says they\u2019re ready for the World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which they may be.<\/p>\n<p>As long as tens of thousands of foreign visitors, who may or may not even know English, don\u2019t mind mixing it up with LA\u2019s famously patient drivers, who never, ever touch their horns or force someone off the road if they impede their progress for even a millisecond.<\/p>\n<p>Because we\u2019re still waiting on all those bus and bike lanes we were promised to get ready for those foreign visitors.<\/p>\n<p>So have fun, sportsball fans.<\/p>\n<p>Rent a bike, and just ride to the venue, restaurant or bar of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>After all, getting there is half the fun, right?<\/p>\n<p>And surviving it is the other half.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Megan forwards news that Sacramento is facing the same problems with ebikes and e-motos you\u2019re seeing just about everywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s only the later that\u2019s really the problem.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>The war on cars may be a myth, but the war on bikes just keeps on going.<\/p>\n<p>Outrage in Toronto, as multiple cops are shown on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DZDCQ1yR6aC\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">video tackling a bike rider and holding him down<\/a>, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/aggressive-arrest-toronto-police-caught-on-tape-tackling-cyclist-who-allegedly-disobeyed-stop-sign\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the apparent crime of rolling a stop sign<\/a> \u2014 even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogto.com\/city\/2026\/06\/toronto-cop-tackling-cyclist-video\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provincial law prohibits using force to stop someone for a routine traffic infraction<\/a> \u201cunless the circumstances present an immediate and serious threat to public safety.\u201d Which is like cops ramming and handcuffing a motorist for turning right on a red arrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WeHo Times reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/wehotimes.com\/memorial-ghost-bike-honoring-cyclist-killed-in-west-hollywood-hit-and-run-goes-missing\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blake Ackerman\u2019s ghost bike disappeared from its location at Fountain and Gardner Street<\/a> sometime Saturday night; no word on who took it or why. I noticed it was missing Sunday afternoon; not seeing it there hurt almost as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/bikinginla.com\/2025\/07\/17\/73-year-old-man-busted-for-fatal-weho-hit-and-run-new-ciclavia-maps-revealed-and-we-all-need-a-pro-bike-guidebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">watching it being placed last July<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Four Master of Public Administration (MPA) students from USC\u2019s Price School were recognized for their work <a href=\"https:\/\/priceschool.usc.edu\/news\/los-angeles-washington-bike-lane-venice\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advising CD11 Councilmember Traci Park on how to make part of Washington Blvd safer<\/a> for bicycle riders.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Hustle <a href=\"https:\/\/thehustle.co\/originals\/the-small-businesses-trying-to-prop-up-the-tandem-bike-industry\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">takes a look at California\u2019s 50-year old Santana Cycles<\/a> \u2014 just \u201c30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles\u201d \u2014 as it tries almost singlehandedly to prop up the tandem industry in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Fontana police <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/video\/fontana-police-warn-of-dangerous-e-bike-pursuits\/11844435\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warn parents about the dangers of kids riding ebikes and e-motorcycles<\/a>, especially when fleeing from police. So if you\u2019re an adult on an electric motorbike, go ahead and flee, evidently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>National<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Velo <a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-gear\/best-road-bike\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considers the year\u2019s best road bikes<\/a>, but kindly hides most of the prices to avoid scaring the crap out of us; fortunately, Road.cc has <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/buyers-guide\/best-road-bikes-under-ps1500-211855?page=2\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more affordable options for under the equivalent of two grand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Minnesota radio station says yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/kroc.com\/ixp\/1172\/p\/can-bicycles-run-stop-signs-minnesota\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bicyclists are legally allowed to roll a stop sign in the state<\/a>, if the intersection is clear.<\/p>\n<p>An \u201cavid cyclist\u201d took up bicycling at age 30 at the urging of his bike-commuting wife, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonjewishweek.com\/avid-cyclist-matthew-gever-leads-dc-jews-on-bikes-holocaust-remembrance-efforts\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bikes to work at the US Department of Justice, while leading DC\u2019s Jew on Bikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>International<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Momentum offers tips on <a href=\"https:\/\/momentummag.com\/bike-summer-2026-seven-steps-to-having-the-best-summer-on-two-wheels\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how to have your best summer ever on two wheels<\/a>. Although it would be pretty damn hard to beat when I was ten or so and riding my bike all over town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No bias here. Canada\u2019s CTV News offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/barrie\/article\/attention-cyclists-heres-what-you-need-to-know-for-a-safe-cycling-season\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">everything you need to know for a safe bicycling season<\/a>, from an ABC check to the 2V1 helmet fitting method.
