{"id":83997,"date":"2025-07-22T19:42:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T19:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83997\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T19:42:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T19:42:08","slug":"pierre-poilievre-demands-government-take-action-against-longest-ballot-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/83997\/","title":{"rendered":"Pierre Poilievre demands government take action against \u2018longest ballot scam\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PierrePoilievre\/status\/1947671566273171575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PierrePoilievre\/status\/1947671566273171575\">calling on the government<\/a> to take action against the advocacy group that\u2019s encouraged nearly 150 candidates to register as Independents in the upcoming byelection in rural Alberta\u2019s Battle River\u2014Crowfoot riding, where he too is running in the hopes of winning back a seat in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a letter addressed to the Government House Leader, Steven MacKinnon, Poilievre calls the ballot flooding \u201ca blatant abuse of our democratic system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The \u201cLongest Ballot Committee,\u201d an electoral reform advocacy group, has already registered nearly 150 candidates, a record in Canadian election history, with the intent to surpass 200 names on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">There are currently 152 names on the ballot, only five of which are not running as Independents: Poilievre running for the Conservatives, Darcy Spady for the Liberals, Grant Abraham for the United Party of Canada, Michael Harris for the Libertarians, and Jeff Willerton for the Christian Heritage Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not democracy in action,\u201d Poilievre wrote in his letter to MacKinnon, which he also posted to social media. \u201cIt\u2019s a deliberate attempt to manipulate the rules, confuse voters, and undermine confidence in our elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Poilievre is asking the government \u201cto take immediate steps\u2026 to end the longest ballot scam,\u201d when MPs return to Parliament in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In his electoral reform demands, the Conservative leader is asking the government to require 0.5 per cent of the population in a riding to sign, \u201cnot just 100 people,\u201d to meet the threshold for candidate nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His second requirement is that \u201ceach signature in support of a candidate be exclusive,\u201d barring signatories from endorsing more than one candidate in the same election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His final demand is to restrict official agents from representing more than one candidate.
