Wil Wheaton reflected on why he initially wasn’t interested in joining The Big Bang Theory<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Wheaton was afraid the show was making fun of nerds, and, once he was asked to join, didn’t want to play a fictionalized version of himself<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Wheaton eventually said yes and began appearing on the show during season three<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Wil Wheaton was going to turn down The Big Bang Theory \u2014 but ultimately changed his mind.<\/p>\n
Wheaton, 53, opened up about his time on the CBS sitcom, which ran from 2007 to 2019, on the June 1 episode of The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n Wheaton remembered hearing about the sitcom, created by Chuck Lorre<\/a> and Bill Prady, years before he was asked to join. He told host Jessica Radloff that he wasn’t interested in watching. \u201cAll I heard was, \u2018It’s a sitcom about nerds,’ and my immediate thought was, \u2018Oh, they’re making fun of us,’ \u201d he said. \u201cBecause that’s what had happened our entire lifetimes. I didn’t realize that one of the reasons Bill created the show was to upset that and change that paradigm.\u201d<\/p>\n He was \u201cvery reluctant\u201d to watch because, as a child, he was \u201cbullied\u201d for being \u201c a nerd.\u201d \u201cI didn’t choose to be a weird, sensitive artist,\u201d he said. He was shamed for not being more athletic and instead being interested in \u201cscience and history and art,\u201d which most of his peers didn’t understand. Wheaton was also a child actor, appearing most notably in 1986’s Stand by Me<\/a> and as Wesley Crusher, boy genius, on Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/a>, beginning in 1987.<\/p>\n Wil Whealton (left) and Jim Parsons on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ But Wheaton eventually watched an episode and realized he was \u201ccompletely wrong\u201d and that the show was \u201cso funny.\u201d<\/p>\n Then he got a call from Prady, 65, asking him if he wanted to appear on the show as a fictionalized version of himself. \u201cBill pitched me on being Sheldon’s nemesis,\u201d he said. At that point in his career, he felt like he \u201cstill had something to prove.\u201d He told Prady that though he loved the show, \u201cI want to be a character. Then I feel like I could be part of this. It’s not stunt casting. It’s not a one off.\u201d Prady understood that he didn’t feel comfortable playing a version of himself and let him think about it.<\/p>\n Wheaton consulted his friend John Rogers, another writer who created shows like The Librarians and Leverage. Rogers \u201cyelled\u201d at Wheaton through the phone. \u201cHe goes, \u2018What the fuck is wrong with you? . . . Get off this call. Call Bill Prady back and tell him yes. A rerun of The Big Bang Theory on basic cable just got higher ratings than first run whatever on on one of the networks. What are you even thinking?’ \u201d<\/p>\n So Wheaton told Prady yes. His first appearance came in season three. Sheldon (Jim Parsons<\/a>) had a deep-seated hatred of Wheaton because he missed an autograph signing that Sheldon was attending. The pair eventually made up, and Wheaton appeared on a recurring basis throughout the rest of the series.<\/p>\n \u201cBig Bang Theory changed my life,\u201d Wheaton admitted. I was with a crew and creative partners in the cast and the writers who made me feel like I was part of a team. We were doing something together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He continued, \u201cThere are all of these like practical career things that come with being a featured [recurring] guest on the highest rated sitcom in the world. There are wonderful things that happen because of that, and I’m grateful for all of them. But that’s not what it was. I made friends. I made friends who made me want to be a better person.\u201d<\/p>\n He also credited the show with helping him focus on his storytelling and the writers of the series, who were open to answering any of his questions. He said in the \u201c46 years\u201d of his career, \u201cThat’s happened twice.\u201d He called it \u201cso rare.\u201d<\/p>\n The Big Bang Theory has already spawned two spin-offs: Young Sheldon<\/a> and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. A third spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe<\/a>, is coming to HBO Max this summer. In it, comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) must restore reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard (Johnny Galecki). Wheaton is also set to appear in the series.<\/p>\n The new series was created by Lorre, Prady and Zak Penn, and Wheaton told The Official Big Bang Podcast that he was \u201cin the front row for the entire development\u201d of the new series.
