PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 As of Monday, Arizona utility companies cannot shut off customers\u2019 power if they\u2019re overdue on bills or have missed a payment as the state heads into a hot summer.<\/p>\n

The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is reminding residents that utilities are barred from cutting off customers\u2019 electricity under a summer moratorium, or suspending service if the National Weather Service predicts 95-degree temperatures.<\/p>\n

The Phoenix area is forecasted to remain in triple-digit heat throughout the week. <\/p>\n

The ACC enforces the summer moratorium that runs from June 1 through Oct. 15, and encourages customers to pay their bills as best they can to avoid accumulating debt. <\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the Arizona Public Service Company (APS) reached a $7 million settlement<\/a> with Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes over its disconnection practices in extreme heat after an 82-year-old woman died in her home days after her power was shut off.<\/p>\n
