The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting five players for a tryout during the team\u2019s mandatory minicamp that began today. P James Platte, WR Trayvon Rudolph, TE Robert Tonyan, LB Amari Burney and LB Jamin Davis are all working out for the Steelers. The tryouts were reported by Steelers.com\u2019s Brian Batko<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Couple notable tryout players today for the Steelers at minicamp, former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan and Washington linebacker Jamin Davis, a 2021 1st-rounder.<\/p>\n

Punter James Platte, wide receiver Trayvon Rudolph and inside linebacker Amari Burney also here on a tryout basis.<\/p>\n

Of those names, Tonyan and Davis are the most notable. Tonyan\u2019s tryout was previously reported<\/a> by ESPN\u2019s Brooke Pryor.<\/p>\n

Davis was a first-round pick by Washington in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected 19th overall, the Kentucky product totaled 104 tackles and three sacks during his second season in the league but was released during the 2024 season.<\/p>\n

Drafted as an off-ball linebacker, Davis has also lined up as an EDGE player, though most of his success has come off-ball. At Kentucky\u2019s 2021 Pro Day, Davis measured in at 6034 and 234 pounds, running a 4.48 40-yard dash and putting up 21 reps on the bench press. He also had an 11\u20190\u2033 broad jump and 42\u2033 vertical jump.<\/p>\n

Davis spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders last season, playing under Steelers defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. He appeared in two games for the Raiders, making three tackles.<\/p>\n

Off-ball linebacker could be a position to which the Steelers are looking to add, with Burney also trying out for the team. Burney was a sixth-round pick by the Raiders in the 2023 NFL Draft, also giving him familiarity playing under Graham. In 24 games over two seasons with the Raiders, Burney made 32 tackles and forced a fumble. Coming out of Florida, Burney measured in at 6017 and 230 pounds and ran a 4.51 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.<\/p>\n

The Steelers also could be looking to bring in competition for Cameron Johnston with Platte trying out. A graduate of The Citadel, he participated in Raiders rookie minicamp in March.<\/p>\n

Platte was a 2024 second-team All-American by the AP and recorded 46.2 yards per punt with a long of 72 last season.<\/p>\n

Rudolph spent four seasons at Northern Illinois before transferring to Toledo last season, where he caught 39 passes for 435 yards and two touchdowns. During his five collegiate seasons, he totaled 192 receptions for 2,482 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also returned kicks during his collegiate career and recorded a 96-yard touchdown return.<\/p>\n

He had signed with the Seattle Seahawks after going undrafted but was waived after the team traded for WR Irvin Charles.<\/p>\n

There are multiple players on the list with connections to the coaching staff, and Tonyan might be the most intriguing name. The Steelers have limited depth behind Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington at tight end, and it wouldn\u2019t be a surprise if the team ended up signing Tonyan.<\/p>\n

Davis\u2019 pedigree is also intriguing, as is the fact he worked under Graham and obviously impressed enough to get a chance to try out with the Steelers.
