The city Department of Transportation (DOT)<\/a> plans to announce on Wednesday the launch of its next phase\u00a0of the\u00a0\u201cmicro hubs\u201d pilot program<\/a> \u2014 adding two new locations where trucks can transfer their cargo to smaller,\u00a0more environmentally friendly vehicles for the \u201clast mile\u201d of delivery, amNewYork has learned.<\/p>\n

The DOT recently opened two new micro hubs in Manhattan, the agency revealed ahead of its June 3 announcement. One is located at Front Street and Maiden Lane in the Financial District, and the other is at Third Avenue and East 91st Street on the Upper East Side.<\/p>\n

Micro hubs offer dedicated curb space where delivery trucks can park and move their goods to lighter and zero-emission vehicles \u2014 such as hand carts, cargo bikes, and electric sprinter vans \u2014 for the last leg of their journeys. They are designed to cut the number of truck miles traveled in the city, with the goal of reducing pollution and traffic congestion.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen big delivery trucks deliver individual packages on local streets, we can see pedestrian crosswalks and travel lanes getting blocked, and a variety of other unsafe challenges,\u201d DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said in a statement. <\/p>\n

\u201cShifting these deliveries onto handcarts, e-bikes, and other smaller delivery options is a win for our environment, street safety, and our neighborhoods,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The DOT\u00a0 first launched the three-year pilot in April 2025. The first three of its planned 36 locations are all on the Upper West Side \u2014 at 77th Street and Broadway, 73rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue, and 85th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.<\/p>\n

The agency plans to continue expanding the pilot by inviting more businesses to participate through an application process and placing them in new neighborhoods. Companies including Net Zero Logistics and Amazon are already using the hubs.<\/p>\n

Mark Chiusano, the CEO of Net Zero Logistics, in a statement called the program a \u201cgame-changer for urban delivery.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cBy providing dedicated curb space for last-mile transfers to cargo bikes and zero-emission modes of transport (including walking), we can cut truck trips, eliminate double parking, and reduce emissions \u2014 all while keeping New York City moving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Micro-hub locations will be selected based on factors such as land-use considerations, the density of the surrounding area, and proximity to bike lanes and public transit. The DOT also launched an online form<\/a>, which logistics companies interested in participating can complete.<\/p>\n

Along with the new locations, DOT also released data gathered from the pilot\u2019s first year.\n<\/p>\n

DOT found that the program replaced over 3,000 truck trips and reduced nine grams of pollution since it was implemented last year. It also led to 860 packages being delivered via handcart and another 110 by cargo bike each day, which helped replace one-and-a-half and three miles of truck vehicle miles traveled each day, respectively.<\/p>\n
