With Pride Month underway, District 1 City Councilwoman Sukh Kaur this week filed a proposal to rename a portion of North Main Avenue \u2014\u00a0the primary thoroughfare through the city\u2019s Pride District \u2014\u00a0after the late drag performer Erica Andrews.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis designation is about highlighting an important part of San Antonio\u2019s history,\u201d Kaur said in a statement. \u201cErica Andrews was not only a groundbreaking performer on the international stage; she was a mentor, a community builder, and a source of visibility and pride for generations of LGBTQ+ individuals in San Antonio and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrews, who died in 2013 at age 43, lived in San Antonio between 1992 and 2012 and was a well-known figure in the city\u2019s LGBTQ+ community. In 2006, the Mexico-born Andrews was named Miss International Drag Queen Thailand and was the \u201cmatriarch\u201d of the Andrews drag family, which includes two-time RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race contestant, Roxxxy Andrews.<\/p>\n

The Kaur\u2019s proposed designation wouldn\u2019t change the official street name or its mailing addresses, her office said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile transgender rights are increasingly under scrutiny across the state and nation, San Antonio has an opportunity to affirm its values of inclusion and recognition,\u201d Kaur said. \u201cThis memorial designation is a visible reminder that transgender people have helped shape our city and its culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaur\u2019s proposal comes months after the councilwoman helped lead the charge<\/a> to paint the sidewalks in San Antonio\u2019s Pride District rainbow. That move came after Gov. Greg Abbott ordered Texas cities to remove \u201cpolitical\u201d pavement markings from their roadways, including the rainbow colored crosswalks at the intersection of North Main Avenue and Evergreen Street.<\/p>\n

San Antonio\u2019s annual Pride Parade will take place Saturday, June 27.<\/p>\n
