\n\t\u201cCBS Evening News\u201d anchor Tony Dokoupil<\/a> paid tribute to Scott Pelley<\/a> after the former \u201c60 Minutes<\/a>\u201d correspondent was fired on Tuesday following an explosive clash with the show\u2019s new executive producer, Nick Bilton.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I started at CBS, Scott Pelley was in this very chair, and still doing a dozen stories a year for \u201860 Minutes,\u2019\u201d Dokoupil said during Wednesday night\u2019s broadcast. \u201cAnd amid all of that, still meeting every new correspondent to share his view of the mission here,\u201d said Dokoupil. \u201cHe believed freedom of the press, to quote [James] Madison, was \u2018the right that guaranteed all the others.\u2019 And the stakes are always that high in that, if you\u2019d made it to CBS News<\/a>, you were among the best in the world. He worked every single day to live up to that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a video compilation of Pelley\u2019s career highlights, Dokoupil added, \u201cHe was in some ways a man from another era, and that\u2019s not a knock. He didn\u2019t watch the competition, he said, because he knew who he was. A journalist who valued truth at all costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPelley was let go from \u201c60 Minutes\u201d<\/a> after he lashed out at Bilton during a staff meeting on Monday, telling the former NYT technology columnist that he had \u201cslender qualifications\u201d<\/a> to be in charge of the historic news program. Bilton was inserted into leadership by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss<\/a>, whom Pelley accused of \u201cmurdering \u201860 Minutes\u2019\u201d during the same meeting.<\/p>\n

\n\tBilton was announced as the new \u201c60 Minutes\u201d boss after a bombshell move from Weiss<\/a>, which saw the firing of longtime executive producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi. Dokoupil\u2019s comments are notable given that Weiss was the one who gave him the \u201cEvening News\u201d role.<\/p>\n

\n\tDokoupil isn\u2019t the only CBS newsman to comment on this unprecedented time at the network. \u201c60 Minutes\u201d legend Steve Kroft told PBS NewsHour that the direction of the show under the guidance of Weiss has been \u201cdisastrous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is journalistic interference,\u201d Kroft said. <\/a>\u201cIt makes no business sense whatsoever. It\u2019s the highest rated news program on television, and it has been that way for more than 50 years. The audience was up about 9% last year.
