We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have linked a diet high in ultraprocessed foods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/fourth-of-july-holiday-meat-b2782086.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like hot dogs and french fries<\/a>, to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000213562\">Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/926525\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1082496\">cancer, and premature death. <\/a>But, it turns out, some ultraprocessed foods may not be that bad for you after all. <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gfieurope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Guide_-Where-does-plant-based-meat-fit-in-the-UPF-conversation_19-May.pdf\">A new report<\/a> on ultraprocessed plant-based meats, by the Good Food Institute and PAN International, is touting the benefits of leaning on the food products, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/food-and-drink\/beyond-meat-burger-taste-vegan-b2500021.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a recent decline in their popularity<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors and dietitians are reluctant to consider alternative proteins when advising patients on nutrition because they view these foods as ultraprocessed,\u201d nutrition scientist Roberta Alessandrini, director of the Dietary Guidelines Initiative at PAN International, recently told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/21\/health\/plant-based-meat-benefits-wellness\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet if carefully chosen, these foods can be a valid and helpful way to shift toward more plant-forward diets, which are good for people and the planet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While \u201cmeatless\u201d meat products are designed to replicate the taste and texture of meat &#8211; and some burger patties even \u201cbleed\u201d &#8211; fake meat generally has a better nutritional profile than red meat, Dr. Frank B. Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2025%2F02%2F17%2Fwell%2Feat%2Fis-fake-meat-healthy.html&amp;articleId=b2793723&amp;key=9ed4af92937c872e0ab792f0310bab4e\">The New York Times<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-1150252751.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Eating ultraprocessed foods has been has been tied to multiple negative health outcomes, including premature death and cancer. Meatless meat is highly processed but researchers say the benefits outweigh any nutrition negatives (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fat composition of beef is so undesirable for health that it\u2019s very easy to be better than that,\u201d Dr. Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the school, told CNN. Willett noted that any important nutrients in beef, that plants lack, can be added to the meat alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnimal products not only have too much saturated fat but lack polyunsaturated fat, fiber and many of the minerals and vitamins available in plants,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But there are downsides. The Australian George Institute found in 2023 that although plant-based meat products are generally healthier than real meats, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.georgeinstitute.org\/news-and-media\/news\/are-plant-based-meats-really-better-for-us-than-the-real-thing\">they can be higher in sugar.<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/how-does-plant-forward-eating-benefit-your-health\"><\/p>\n<p>Another issue is the high sodium content<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2025%2F02%2F17%2Fwell%2Feat%2Fis-fake-meat-healthy.html&amp;articleId=b2793723&amp;key=9ed4af92937c872e0ab792f0310bab4e\">. Red meat has less salt, but many would still season a steak before eating \u2014 sometimes consuming the same amount of salt as people eating higher sodium products, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32780794\/\">a randomized clinical trial in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2179481534.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The meat industry is a major contributor to the greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the planet. Researchers say cutting back on meat could help to make a difference in the fight against climate change (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>And while the higher cost of plant-based meats may have consumers still largely reaching for the real stuff, there is another hefty price tag that comes with the latter.<\/p>\n<p>The meat industry contributes 16.5 percent of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions globally each year, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/programs\/population_and_sustainability\/climate\/Climate-Diet-report.html\">Center for Biological Diversity<\/a>.
