WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump called for criminal charges Tuesday against Barack Obama for allegedly\u00a0ordering an assessment that Russia meddled<\/a>\u00a0to help Trump with the 2016 election \u2014 an idea the former president\u2019s\u00a0office blasted as \u201coutrageous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter what they did to me, whether it\u2019s right or wrong, it\u2019s time to go after people.\u00a0Obama has been caught directly,\u201d Trump, 79, said in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at those papers, they have them stone cold, and it was President Obama\u2026 the leader of the gang was President Obama, Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him?\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump said \u201cit\u2019s time to go after people\u201d in reference to former President Obama ordering an investigation into Russia\u2019s alleged role in the 2016 election. Getty Images<\/p>\n

Trump was referring to a document declassified last week indicating that Obama, now 63, ordered an intelligence report damaging to Trump after his surprise election win.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s criminal at the highest level.\u00a0It would be President Obama, he started it. And [Joe] Biden was there with him, and [then-FBI Director James] Comey was there, and [then-Director of National Intelligence] James] Clapper \u2014 the whole group was there, and [then-CIA Director John] Brennan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump added: \u201cHe\u2019s guilty \u2026\u00a0This was treason, this was every word you could think of. They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Current DNI Tulsi Gabbard sent a criminal referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi Friday raising the possibility the 44th president broke the law by undermining Trump\u2019s victory in 2016.<\/p>\n

An email released by Gabbard showed that\u00a0Obama ordered an intelligence assessment\u00a0<\/a>that eventually found Russia intervened to help Trump defeat Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton \u2014 with that assessment fueling theories of unlawful collusion between the 45th president and the Kremlin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After a White House meeting on Dec. 9, 2016, Clapper\u2019s assistant emailed spy agency leaders asking for an assessment\u00a0\u201cper the President\u2019s request\u201d\u00a0to describe \u201ctools Moscow used and actions it took to influence the 2016 election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump spent more than half of his first term fending off FBI and congressional investigations of whether he was in cahoots with Moscow \u2014 a theory ultimately dashed by special counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s report in April 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook,\u00a0he\u2019s guilty. It\u2019s not a question,\u201d Trump said of Obama.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is like proof, irrefutable proof that Obama was seditious, that Obama led, was trying to lead a coup \u2014 and it was with Hillary Clinton, with all these other people, but Obama headed it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president then repeated: \u201cThis was treason. This was every word you can think of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump was hosting Philippine\u00a0President Ferdinand \u201cBongbong\u201d Marcos Jr. and turning to his guest added:\u00a0\u201cThis man has seen some pretty rough countries, but you\u2019ve never seen anything like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcos\u2019 father, also named Ferdinand, ruled the Philippines as a dictator from 1965 to 1986.<\/p>\n

Trump railed against Obama and senior figures from his predecessor\u2019s administration as he addressed more questions about the late sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein, whose\u00a0co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell is being sought by the Justice Department\u00a0<\/a>for an interview after Bondi attempted to slam the door on further transparency this month.<\/p>\n

Trump, who has\u00a0fumed about focus on his past ties with Epstein<\/a>\u00a0and continued bipartisan interest in the case, told the press: \u201cYou ought to take a look at that [Obama allegation] and stop talking about nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patrick Rodenbush, a\u00a0spokesman for Obama, 63, returned fire in a statement Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction,\u201d Rodenbush said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump historically has referred to his leading political adversaries as alleged criminals,\u00a0but during his first term no leading adversaries were indicted and the taunts were widely\u00a0viewed as base-revving political commentary. It\u2019s unclear if the four criminal charges that Trump faced before winning a second term in last November\u2019s election make pursuit of prominent Democrats any more likely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump said in his extended attack on Obama that more documents may be unveiled further detailing actions that undermined his first administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what Tulsi told me, she\u2019s got thousands of additional documents coming. So President Obama, it was his concept, his idea, but he also got it from crooked Hillary Clinton \u2014 crooked as a $3 bill,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHillary Clinton and her group, the Democrats, spent $12 million to [ex-MI-6 spy] Christopher Steele to write up a report that was a total fake report. Took two years to figure that out, but it came out that it was a total fake report. It was made-up fiction.<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably the only thing I respect about the press,\u201d Trump went on, \u201cis the press refused to write it before the election.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president added that he was \u201cvery happy\u201d that he let Clinton \u201coff the hook\u201d during his first term for alleged crimes involving storing classified documents on a private email server, but that he\u2019s not inclined to give another pass.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe caught Hillary Clinton. We caught Barack Hussein Obama. They\u2019re the ones, and then you have many, many people under them, [former national security adviser] Susan Rice, they\u2019re all there. The names are all there. And I guess they figured they\u2019re going to put this in \u2018classified information\u2019 and nobody will ever see it again. But it doesn\u2019t work that way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
