Image credit: Lewis LaRosa \/ J\u00e3o Canola.<\/p>\n<p>Jian changmaensis lived in what is now northwestern China roughly 124 to 120 million years ago (Early Cretaceous epoch).<\/p>\n<p>The species belonged to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microraptoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Microraptorinae,<\/a> a subgroup of small feathered <a href=\"https:\/\/ucmp.berkeley.edu\/diapsids\/saurischia\/dromaeosauridae.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dromaeosaurid dinosaurs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Members of this lineage include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/discover\/dino-directory\/microraptor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Microraptor<\/a>, the four-winged dinosaur widely regarded as capable of gliding and possibly powered flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJian changmaensis is one of the biggest microraptor specimens that has ever been found,\u201d said Dr. Jingmai O\u2019Connor, a paleontologist with the Field Museum of Natural History and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe piece of its upper arm bone that we have is about 10 cm (4 inches) long, so the entire dinosaur probably had something like a four-foot wingspan, around the size of a barn owl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspect that Jian changmaensis, like its fellow microraptors, had long feathers on both its arms and its legs, giving it the appearance of having four \u2018wings\u2019 that it used to glide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJian changmaensis and the other microraptors probably weren\u2019t capable of true, powered flight, but they could probably glide like a flying squirrel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of Jian changmaensis were found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xiagou_Formation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Xiagou Formation<\/a>, exposed near the village of Changma in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu province.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 skeletons of Early Cretaceous birds have been recovered there, many preserving soft tissues including feathers and skin.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in all that time, not a single specimen of any non-avian dinosaur had ever been found at the site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScientists have found these weird, broken-up clusters of bird bones at this site, and we didn\u2019t know what made them,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Connor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new microraptor dinosaur, Jian changmaensis, is our best guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only dinosaur found at this site that wasn\u2019t a bird, it was a carnivore, and it was much bigger than everything else that we\u2019ve found there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of Jian changmaensis carries implications beyond the identification of a new species.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, all unambiguous members of Microraptorinae had been found in the Jehol Group, a set of geological formations in northeastern China, roughly 2,000 km away from Changma.<\/p>\n<p>Jian changmaensis pushes the confirmed range of the group into northwestern China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJian changmaensis reveals that non-avian dinosaurs lived in what is now the Changma Basin, an area famous for its fossil birds,\u201d said Dr. Matt Lamanna, a paleontologist at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team has recovered more than a hundred bird fossils at Changma, but only this single non-avian dinosaur specimen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJian changmaensis provides critical new insight into the biological history of the Changma region and the ecological context of the ancestors of today\u2019s birds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot understand life on the planet today without looking at its origins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirds are arguably the most successful group of land-dwelling vertebrate animals on Earth today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning about early birds and their close non-bird dinosaur relatives gives us a better understanding of what made the group of birds that survived so special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s paper was published today in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegiemnh.org\/research\/annals-of-carnegie-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Annals of Carnegie Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Ling-Qi Zhou et al. 2026.
