ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A former Alaska Airlines pilot is speaking out about mental health in the workplace following an incident in 2023 where prosecutors say he tried to turn off the engines of a plane mid-flight after he was feeling the effects of magic mushrooms while off duty.<\/p>\n

The flight diverted and landed safely in Portland, Oregon. Joe Emerson was arrested, but the incident sparked a growing debate over pilot mental health.<\/p>\n

A 2022 study estimated 56% of pilots avoid seeking medical care due to fear of being grounded.<\/p>\n

In an interview with CBS News, Emerson said he takes responsibility for his actions. He is facing more than 80 state and federal charges.<\/p>\n

Other high-stress professions include doctors and nurses, law enforcement, military, firefighters and social workers.<\/p>\n

Alaska\u2019s News Source interviewed Brandy Stratman from Providence Behavioral Health Monday to speak more about the stigma workers in these types of careers face.<\/p>\n
