{"id":84624,"date":"2025-07-23T01:12:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T01:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/84624\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T01:12:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T01:12:09","slug":"uc-davis-lands-3-6m-nih-grant-for-eye-gene-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/84624\/","title":{"rendered":"UC Davis Lands $3.6M NIH Grant for Eye Gene Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/eyecenter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology<\/a> has received a five-year, $3.6 million grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Eye Institute<\/a> to explore a new way to treat vision loss using gene therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The research could lead to safer and more effective treatments for people with serious eye diseases like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/amd-macular-degeneration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">macular degeneration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/conditions\/inherited-retinal-disorders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inherited blindness<\/a>. It could also lead to treatments that don&#8217;t require surgery and can be done more widely in clinics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re excited to explore this new way of delivering gene therapy to the eye,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/eyecenter\/yiulab\/LabMembers.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glenn Yiu<\/a>, a retinal specialist at the UC Davis Eye Center and lead investigator for the grant. &#8220;If we can make gene delivery safer and more effective, it could open the door to treating many more patients with blinding eye diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research team includes experts in eye surgery, drug delivery, immunology, and gene therapy from UC Davis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caltech<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of Washington<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stevens.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stevens Institute of Technology<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/eyecenter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Glenn-Yiu-quote.jpg\" alt=\"Glenn Yiu\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If we can make gene delivery safer and more effective, it could open the door to treating many more patients with blinding eye diseases.-Glenn Yiu, professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A new route to delivering gene therapy<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/cellular-gene-therapy-products\/what-gene-therapy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gene therapy<\/a> is a way to treat diseases by delivering healthy genes into the body using harmless viruses to carry the gene into diseased tissues. In the eye, this is often done by injecting the virus either into the jelly-like center of the eye (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/anatomy\/vitreous\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitreous<\/a>) or under the tissue lining the back of the eye (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/anatomy\/retina-103\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retina<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But both methods can have drawbacks: one requires surgery. The other doesn&#8217;t reach the right cells very well and can cause inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>The team is studying a third option: injecting the gene therapy into the suprachoroidal space, a tiny layer between the white of the eye and the blood vessels that feed the retina.<\/p>\n<p>This method is potentially less invasive, but it still needs improvement. The researchers will study the treatment method on non-human primates like rhesus monkeys, which have eyes that are similar to humans. The work involves a collaboration between the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/medical-school\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UC Davis School of Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cnprc.ucdavis.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California National Primate Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The team will test how to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spread the treatment more effectively to the center of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/anatomy\/retina-103\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retina<\/a> (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/anatomy\/macula-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">macula<\/a>), which is important for sharp vision.<\/li>\n<li>Target the right cells, like photoreceptors and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8355697\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retinal pigment cells<\/a>, which are often damaged in eye diseases.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce side effects, like inflammation, by testing different medications that calm the immune system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They&#8217;ll also try to design and engineer new versions of the virus that are specially crafted to cross barriers in the eye and reach deeper layers.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers hope their findings will expand access to gene therapy to allow office-based treatments that are less invasive and more widely available to patients.<\/p>\n<p>    \/Public Release.
