{"id":846922,"date":"2026-06-05T20:29:24","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T20:29:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/846922\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T20:29:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T20:29:24","slug":"nature-photographer-captures-dramatic-encounter-with-gray-whale-on-humboldt-county-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/846922\/","title":{"rendered":"Nature photographer captures dramatic encounter with gray whale on Humboldt County beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An avid amateur nature photographer who was visiting the North Coast last month witnessed an unusual whale sighting and captured it in stunning photos that were shared with The Press Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Salvaggio of Fremont and his wife, Francine, arrived at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=418\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trinidad State Beach<\/a> north of McKinleyville early in the morning of May 21 with plans to photograph some rocks, he said in a phone call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we got to the beach, somebody said something about, \u2018the whale is still in the surf,&#8217;\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming the person meant that a dead whale had washed ashore, Salvaggio joined a crowd of about 100 people, including several students from a local school on a field trip, gathered around small gray whale about 25 feet long that was stranded in the surf.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A 25-foot gray whale attempts to get back into the surf after being beached at Trinidad State Beach in Humboldt County, Thursday, May 21, 2026. (Michael Salvaggio)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when we got up to it, I wasn\u2019t sure it was alive until it spouted and its tail kicked,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there was no doubt, it was still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People in the crowd told Salvaggio they believed the whale, a juvenile, was escaping an orca attack when it swam into shallow water and became caught by the low tide.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jenifer\u00a0Piccinini, a longtime researcher who trains and oversees the volunteer docents for the <a href=\"https:\/\/stewardscr.org\/sonoma-coast-volunteer-program-whale-watch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods\u2019 Whale Watch Program<\/a>, gray whale calves migrating north in the spring to the Arctic Sea from the breeding waters of Baja are hunted by orcas and great white sharks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty much a gauntlet for them,\u201d she said in a phone call. \u201cThe moms keep them very close to shore to prevent attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After viewing Salvaggio\u2019s photos, Piccinini said that the whale\u2019s size indicated it was born this year. She added that it was rare for calves to strand themselves while fleeing attacks. More often, whales become stranded because of vessel strikes or starvation, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening in the Arctic, with the sea ice melting, is really impacting the quality and quantity of their food sources,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For several hours, the crowd \u2014 which also included volunteers from at least one whale rescue group \u2014 watched the whale, facing south on the beach, repeatedly attempt to realign itself toward the ocean, only to be pushed back by the waves, Salvaggio said.<\/p>\n<p>He estimated only 25 percent of the whale\u2019s body was in the water. (Michael Salvaggio)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was sad in one way because you could see her tiring, but knowing the high tide was coming, it was just a matter if the tide would get high enough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The whale made its way back into the water shortly after 2 p.m. to the cheers of the crowd, Salvaggio said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time she would try, people got so excited.
