PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 Homeowners associations have sparked a lot of controversy over the years, with residents complaining about the way they are treated.<\/p>\n
Bill McKay thinks it\u2019s time there was a place to see whether an HOA is good, bad or incompetent.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs homeowners and board members we really feel the homeowner needs to be empowered and have an easy way to communicate,\u201d said McKay.<\/p>\n
The longtime Phoenix resident has lived in HOA communities and served on a number of boards, so he\u2019s seen first hand the problems HOA\u2019s can create and how quickly disputes can flare up. <\/p>\n
McKay wants to give homeowners a voice and hold HOAs accountable at the same time, so he made HoaDoctor.com<\/a>. It\u2019s a tech platform that empowers homeowners to rate HOA boards and management companies.<\/p>\n RELATED: <\/b>Goodyear homeowner cited for free water hits roadblock in HOA fight<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI hope its going to be an advocacy platform where homeowners can go and leave an honest, authentic and verified rating and review of property management company and their board,\u201d said McKay.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s how the HOA doctor works.<\/p>\n Homeowners can go on the site and answer a list of questions about their HOA. Everything, from their responsiveness to how they handle finances, maintenance, and community improvements.<\/p>\n McKay said it will be different from Google and Yelp reviews because not everyone can go on the site and comment. All users will be verified through public records to ensure they live in the community they\u2019re reviewing.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can see if a person is a homeowner, or if they are renting their home to somebody,\u201d said McKay. \u201cIt\u2019s only after checking those safeguards that we will allow the posting of a rating and review.\u201d<\/p>\n Dave Russell is the community manager of the Circle Tree HOA in Mesa. He doesn\u2019t have a problem being ranked and reviewed, but thinks other HOAs might.<\/p>\n \u201cI think if they are doing the right things, they shouldn\u2019t have any issues with this,\u201d said Russell. \u201cIt could be beneficial to them. If you are running a good community and people are happy and leaving positive reviews.
