JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office released new information detailing how a human bone was discovered near a driveway in Northwest Jacksonville. <\/p>\n
JSO says the remains were found near Lincrest Drive South.<\/p>\n
The incident report from the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office details a woman was throwing a softball with her daughter Wednesday night, when her daughter overthrew the ball into their neighbor\u2019s yard.<\/p>\n
When she went to grab it, she noticed what appeared to be a \u201chuman femur bone lying in the grass\u201d near a driveway. <\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<<<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n She reported the discovery to JSO.<\/p>\n Investigators came out to the scene, and after consulting with the Northeast Florida Medical Examiner\u2019s office, they confirmed it was a human bone.<\/p>\n Finding that bone led them to a backyard on the same street \u2014 where they found more human remains.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it\u2019s that close what else is going on around us,\u201d said John Thomas, who lives down the road. \u201cIt\u2019s scary, it really is!<\/p>\n Action News Jax found that a missing person was reported in this area in 2024, named Roderick Earl Porter. <\/p>\n The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says Porter would be 56 years old now.<\/p>\n JSO lists Porter\u2019s location as the same as where the remains were found.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not clear yet whose remains these are, but forensics experts are in the process of identifying them. <\/p>\n [DOWNLOAD: <\/b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a>]<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cThe first thing they\u2019re going to do is they\u2019re going to do a search and a skeletal inventory to make sure they have the full skeleton,\u201d said Carla Perdue, Program Coordinator for Public Safety and Security at FSU Panama City. \u201cIf they determined that it was partially buried, then they\u2019re to set up a grid and they will very methodically remove bones layer by layer.\u201d<\/p>\n Perdue has a doctorate in forensic science and a master\u2019s in criminology and forensic science.
