said biologist Ben Larson from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It expands our picture of what single-celled organisms are capable of, and gives us a new system for asking questions about how cells control their form and function,\u201d said Dr Larson, a co-author of the PNAS study.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Euplotes gigatrox cell, imaged by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/c247a84ee17afecf18bdd98ffc0ee44c.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Euplotes gigatrox cell, imaged by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The behaviour change is not just confined to feeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As single cells, the protozoan walks across surfaces and swims gracefully along helical trajectories in fluid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But in their supergiant form, they move in circular paths suited to hunting surface-crawling prey, and tumble clumsily rather than swim when displaced from a surface, scientists found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Supergiant formation represents a tradeoff.
