JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 The family of Rashaud Martin, the man who died under the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2019s custody back in October outside of a mental health facility, is still demanding answers.<\/p>\n
The family held a vigil on Saturday in Riverview Park to celebrate Martin\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
Martin died on Oct. 24, 2025<\/a>, after being transported by JSO to a mental health resources center under Florida\u2019s Baker Act following a \u201cdomestic disturbance\u201d call at his mother\u2019s home.<\/p>\n His mother, Vanessa, disputes the title \u201cdomestic disturbance,\u2019 noting that it makes the incident sound more violent than it was.<\/p>\n She says the night of Martin\u2019s death, her son was having the worst schizophrenic episode she\u2019s seen since he was diagnosed eight years earlier after a car accident when he hit his head.<\/p>\n \u201cThat particular night, it just escalated into a person I didn\u2019t even recognize,\u201d Vanessa said. \u201cThat altered personality came out, and I knew I needed help, so I called for help\u2026 thinking I was getting help, only to find out that apparently he never made it to mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n But Martin would never be admitted.<\/p>\n \u201cI did receive a call saying Rashad has arrived, but now I\u2019m learning that he never arrived,\u201d Vanessa said. \u201cHe perished in the back of the police car.\u201d<\/p>\n Upon arrival, Martin was found unresponsive. The police report says that officers issued him multiple doses of Narcan, but it did not revive him. He was pronounced dead shortly after.<\/p>\n Almost eight months later, the Martin family<\/a> is still awaiting bodycam footage from the officers driving him that night.<\/p>\n \u201cThe story is not adding up,\u201d Lucretia, Martin\u2019s sister, said. \u201cWhat JSO is not saying is not adding up. I\u2019m just gonna let the community know now, they\u2019re liars.\u201d<\/p>\n Lucretia says that JSO told their attorney that there\u2019s a waiting period for bodycam footage.<\/p>\n \u201cY\u2019all done released like eight body cam footage since my brother died,\u201d she said. \u201cSo your waiting period is over, and you know it, so you need to release my brother\u2019s body cam footage.\u201d<\/p>\n The Jacksonville Community Action Committee attended Martin\u2019s vigil.
