{"id":851852,"date":"2026-06-08T01:30:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T01:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/851852\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T01:30:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T01:30:14","slug":"toronto-man-charged-in-alleged-door-to-door-fraud-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/851852\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto man charged in alleged door-to-door fraud scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"c-overline b-overline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/toronto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"b-date-custom__date-item\">Updated:\u00a0June 07, 2026 at 6:55PM EDT<\/p>\n<p class=\"b-date-custom__date-item\">Published:\u00a0June 07, 2026 at 12:44PM EDT<\/p>\n<p>North Bay police warn of rising home improvement scams, urging caution over door-to-door, flyer or online offers for cheap roofing or driveway work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A 26-year-old Toronto man faces an attempted fraud charge following an investigation into a door-to-door solicitor who falsely claimed ties to a defunct federal government rebate program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The North Bay Police Service said the man allegedly attended a residence in <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/2g4Pus37gWoM9Bh18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/2g4Pus37gWoM9Bh18\">the Birch Haven area<\/a> on the morning of Feb. 20 and claimed to be representing a well-known energy company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe individual reportedly stated they held the necessary certifications and were offering services through a legitimate Home Energy Conservation Program funded by the Government of Canada,\u201d police said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Police said the federal Home Energy Conservation Program referenced by the individual concluded several years ago and is no longer in operation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, the man was allegedly offering household appliances and promising rebates from $5,000 to $10,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/R4YHQXEZNNDGJKES65Q3ZLANNU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>NORTH BAY POLICE SERVICE &#8211; BUILDING An undated photo of the exterior of the North Bay Police Service &#8211; Constable Leonard Slater Memorial Building in North Bay, Ont. (File photo\/CTV News) Fraud prevention tips from police<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">North Bay police have released the following recommendations to help residents avoid similar schemes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a company, government agency, or utility provider by contacting the company or organization directly.<\/li>\n<li>Ask for identification and independently contact the company using a phone number or website you have obtained through your own research.<\/li>\n<li>Be cautious of unsolicited door-to-door sales pitches, especially those involving rebates, grants or limited-time offers.<\/li>\n<li>Never provide banking information, credit card numbers, or personal identification documents to someone you do not know or trust.<\/li>\n<li>Do not feel pressured to make an immediate decision.
