Sports flashback:<\/strong> June 8, 1971<\/p>\n 1971:<\/strong> The White Sox had the No. 1 pick in the draft. They selected catcher Danny Goodwin<\/a> from Peoria Central High School, but he declined to sign a reported six-figure offer<\/a> and opted instead to play at Southern University. Goodwin was again drafted with the No. 1 pick in 1975, this time by the California Angels<\/a>, and he went on to play seven seasons in the majors.<\/p>\n Weather records <\/strong>(from the National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n 1869:<\/strong> Chicago inventor Ives W. McGaffey<\/a> received a patent for a \u201csweeping machine.\u201d It was an early version of a vacuum cleaner.<\/p>\n Chicago innovations that changed the world<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Relatively light and compact, his model had a tricky hand crank and an eyebrow-raising $25 price tag (who could afford such convenience?). With the help of the American Carpet Cleaning Co. of Boston, McGaffey sold models in Chicago and Boston. It is thought, though, that most were lost in the Chicago Fire of 1871.<\/p>\n 1976:<\/strong> Boston Bruins great Bobby Orr<\/a> signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. Knee injuries and operations limited his time on the ice, but the Hawks made him an assistant coach<\/a> in 1978.<\/p>\n Patrick Kane timeline: As the Chicago Blackhawks great heads to New York, he leaves behind a trove of iconic moments<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n 2013:<\/strong> Patrick Kane scored his third goal of the game<\/a>, assisted by Jonathan Toews, in double overtime to clinch the Western Conference title for the Blackhawks over the defending champion Los Angeles Kings.<\/p>\n \u201cRight now, it\u2019s almost like I\u2019m in a different zone, the Twilight Zone or something,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n 2025:<\/strong> \u201cPurpose,\u201d<\/a> Steppenwolf Theatre Company\u2019s acclaimed production of the play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, was honored with two Tony Awards, including Best Play. It also won a Pulitzer Prize<\/a>.
