(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> The White Sox had the No. 1 pick in the draft. They selected catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-danny-goodwin-picked-by\/173943898\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danny Goodwin<\/a> from Peoria Central High School, but he declined to sign a reported <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-danny-goodwin-rejects-si\/173943989\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six-figure offer<\/a> and opted instead to play at Southern University. Goodwin was again drafted with the No. 1 pick in 1975, this time by the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-cubs-draft-evanston-prep\/173944119\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California Angels<\/a>, and he went on to play seven seasons in the majors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather records <\/strong>(from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/climate?wfo=lot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High temperature: <strong>97 degrees<\/strong> (1933)<\/li>\n<li>Low temperature: <strong>42 degrees<\/strong> (1885)<\/li>\n<li>Precipitation: <strong>2.07 inches<\/strong> (1958)<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall: <strong>Trace<\/strong> (2015)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Ives W. McGaffey, of Chicago, received a patent on June 8, 1869, for an &#8220;improved sweeping-machine&#8221; for use in cleaning floors. (U.S. Patent Office)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1869:<\/strong> Chicago inventor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/10\/16\/the-vacuum-cleaner-1868\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ives W. McGaffey<\/a> received a patent for a \u201csweeping machine.\u201d It was an early version of a vacuum cleaner.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"kaDWwkECXZ\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2014\/01\/14\/chicago-innovations-that-changed-the-world\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago innovations that changed the world<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Relatively light and compact, his model had a tricky hand crank and an eyebrow-raising $25 price tag (who could afford such convenience?). With the help of the American Carpet Cleaning Co. of Boston, McGaffey sold models in Chicago and Boston. (Michael Budrys\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> Boston Bruins great <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bobby-orr-guess-im-set\/173944274\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bobby Orr<\/a> signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. (Michael Brosilow)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2025:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/06\/08\/2025-tony-awards-steppenwolf-purpose\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cPurpose,\u201d<\/a> Steppenwolf Theatre Company\u2019s acclaimed production of the play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, was honored with two Tony Awards, including Best Play. It also won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/05\/05\/steppenwolf-theatre-play-purpose-wins-the-pulitzer-prize-for-drama\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pulitzer Prize<\/a>.
