Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that the Trump administration\u2019s plan to increase the amount of ICE personnel in the city would \u201cruin the spirit of the World Cup,\u201d according to Josh Wingrove of BLOOMBERG NEWS. President Trump\u2019s border czar, Tom Homan, appearing on Fox on Monday said, \u201cYou\u2019re going to see more ICE than you\u2019ve ever seen in New York City, and it\u2019s coming. I just reviewed an operational plan.\u201d Wingrove notes the World Cup is \u201cexpected to draw thousands of foreign visitors\u201d to the N.Y. metro area, which is hosting several matches including the final (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-08\/trump-border-chief-vows-new-york-ice-surge-says-it-s-coming?srnd=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BLOOMBERG NEWS, 6\/8<\/a>). Mamdani in a post on X wrote, \u201cSoccer would not exist without immigrants. Immigrants play and coach the game, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible. Six of the players on the US Men\u2019s National Team are immigrants. We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities &#8212; especially at this moment.
