And then there\u2019s OpenAI CEO Sam Altman\u2019s other company, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/17\/sam-altmans-project-world-looks-to-scale-its-human-verification-empire-first-stop-tinder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tools for Humanity<\/a>, which is reportedly conducting layoffs, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/sam-altman-orb-worldcoin-tools-for-humanity-layoffs-2026-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Business Insider<\/a>. TechCrunch has reached out to the company for confirmation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might know Tools for Humanity better through its verification project known as World \u2014 and its related device, a creepy silver orb that wants to scan your eyeballs. The idea is that the company will be able to verify people\u2019s identities using unique iris scans, helping to distinguish human activity from bot activity in the increasingly automated world that Tools for Humanity co-founder and chairman Altman is constructing. The company would also use these scans to validate people\u2019s identities to support the trade of its own cryptocurrency, Worldcoin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"454\" width=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/GettyImages-2139240522.jpg\" alt=\"Worldcoin plans to resume iris scans in Kenya soon\" class=\"wp-image-2789082\"  \/><strong>Image Credits:<\/strong>JUAN MABROMATA\/AFP \/ Getty Images under a  license.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These vague, suspicious ambitions were enough to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/podcast\/sam-altmans-crypto-project-worldcoin-got-more-coin-in-latest-115m-raise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raise money<\/a> at a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/fintech-ecommerce\/crypto-web3-venture-tools-for-humanity\/\" target=\"_blank\">$2.5 billion valuation<\/a> from investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Bain Capital, and other funds backing blockchain companies. But now the company is reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/17\/sam-altmans-project-world-looks-to-scale-its-human-verification-empire-first-stop-tinder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">downsizing<\/a> as it struggles to create revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the U.S., companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/17\/sam-altmans-project-world-looks-to-scale-its-human-verification-empire-first-stop-tinder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tinder<\/a>, Zoom, and Docusign have partnered on Altman\u2019s side project. Internationally, Tools for Humanity has faced <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/02\/kenya-suspends-worldcoin-scans-over-security-privacy-and-financial-concerns\/?tpcc=tcplustwitter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory and ethical concerns<\/a>. In Kenya, India, and Hong Kong, for example, people were offered the equivalent of <a href=\"https:\/\/restofworld.org\/2023\/worldcoin-orb-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$50 in Worldcoin<\/a> in exchange for their biometric data. Kenya later banned World from operating in the country, citing privacy and financial concerns; meanwhile, South Korea fined the company $830,000 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/318233\/south-korea-830k-penalty-on-worldcoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">allegedly violating<\/a> local privacy law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who would\u2019ve thought?
