We\u2019re heading into the final week of OTAs, with a mandatory veteran mini-camp on the immediate horizon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">We\u2019ll hit the final OTA open to the media on Tuesday, with plenty to keep an eye on in this practice. (Photo by John Byrum\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachaad White <\/strong>catching passes<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">We won\u2019t have a firm grasp on the state of the Commanders running game until the pads come on, but we can catch glimpses of how they work out of the backfield as pass catching options. Free agent signing Rachaad White is a good one, someone with a solid track record as a receiver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">He had 50 catches for 290 yards and two touchdowns last season, but <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.nfl.com\/players\/player\/54556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he had 64 catches for 549 yards and three scores<\/a> the year before. There\u2019s potential here, especially with Bill Croskey-Merritt not expected to be an active part of the passing game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">And, during a time without contact, running back evaluation is best kept to the passing game. This is where White can shine and earn a defined role in a crowded backfield with Croskey-Merritt and rookie Kaytron Allen, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">White will be a weapon as a runner but could really be an asset as a third-down back. General manager Adam Peters hasn\u2019t said so directly, though the assumption (right or nah) is that Brandon Aiyuk will be a Commander \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/sports\/nfl\/washington-commanders\/washington-commanders-brandon-aiyuk-social-media-video-49ers-minicamp\/65-8bdff827-0bd0-4517-9da8-d53dfa8fa078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he sure seems to want that<\/a> \u2014 when\/if the San Francisco 49ers release him. Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hogshaven.com\/washington-commanders-analysis\/416157\/washington-commanders-nfl-free-agency-stefon-diggs-brandon-aiyuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Washington could sign DMV guy and steady producer Stefon Diggs<\/a>, though he\u2019s been on the market for some time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">There are other athletes vying for the spot opposite Terry McLaurin right now, with former first-round pick Treylon Burks and this year\u2019s third-round pick Antonio Williams competing for regular duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">There are options at that spot, but also think about the slot, where receiving talent will be required. Some fans are bullish on Luke McCaffrey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4426948\/luke-mccaffrey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">who shined at times<\/a> and can be a positive contributor. Can Dyami Brown be better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4361577\/dyami-brown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in his second Commanders stint<\/a>? And then there\u2019s Jaylin Lane, a 2025 fourth-round pick looking to prove himself. He has played a ton inside and has done well in those endeavors. That said, he\u2019s versatile enough to play outside as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">While OTAs are a time where we\u2019ll see mixing and matching, and players cross training positions, this is an opportunity to see how the Commanders use the cornerbacks at their disposal. Even with Trey Amos still sidelined while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hogshaven.com\/daily-slop\/408994\/daily-slop-6-apr-26-commanders-cb-trey-amos-on-his-rehab-legs-going-good-man-for-real-for-real\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recovering from a lower leg injury,<\/a> the cornerback positioning remains important. How much is Robertson working inside versus outside? Is he a member of the first-team base defense right now? How often are we seeing safeties in the slot? Daronte Jones is expected to run a bunch of three safety sets. How often is that the case?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">We can take mental notes on all of these things to give us clues about the new scheme as we head towards training camp. Robertson is the keystone in this renewed defensive effort as he\u2019s the one high on the depth chart who can move around the secondary. Even with Amos out, is he lining up inside?
