For the last year and a half, we\u2019ve been keeping up with a few small businesses in Altadena<\/a> as they find a way forward<\/a> after the Eaton Fire, which destroyed more than 9,000 homes and structures<\/a> last January in California. Usually, that means rebuilding<\/a> or finding a new lease. <\/p>\n

But last week, \u201cMarketplace\u201d host Kai Ryssdal got an inside look at a different path forward on the residential side of things: house relocation. <\/p>\n

Ryssdal met with Morgan Sykes Jaybush, creative director at the architecture firm Omgivning and founder of its Historic House Relocation Project. The two met outside a home built in 1911 that Jaybush and his team moved from Hollywood, where it was slated for demolition, to Altadena, where the home previously on the lot had burned down. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe would have loved to leave the house where it was, but someone was going to tear it down,\u201d Jaybush said. \u201cThere were three big craftsman houses all in a row, and somebody bought all three to build a 150-unit apartment building.\u201d <\/p>\n

Jaybush said the owner of the home agreed to sell the house for $1 since they were planning on tearing it down anyway. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s addressing the fire problem, and it\u2019s also addressing the problem of demolition that we have in the city,\u201d Jaybush said on house relocation. \u201cThis is also a way to keep character within our city, keep things out of the landfill, and it could be a more affordable way for people to build.\u201d <\/p>\n

His company has moved four houses so far, with eight more scheduled for relocation for fire victims. They have nearly 200 more families interested in house relocation, and they\u2019re keeping track of other homes slated for demolition across the Los Angeles area. <\/p>\n

Jaybush estimated the Altadena craftsman Ryssdal toured will be move-in ready this August. His team relocated the home \u2014 which they had to divide into several pieces \u2014 via flatbed trucks last August. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quicker and cheaper, but it still costs money and takes time,\u201d Jaybush said about the relocation process. <\/p>\n

He said they\u2019re averaging about $350 a square foot on the relocations. That\u2019s compared to $450 to $650 per square foot for a basic new build, according to Jaybush. For a home like this one \u2014 which has built-in crown molding and paneling \u2014 he estimated new construction would cost around $1,000 per square foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think people are excited about it, \u201cJaybush said. \u201cIt\u2019s for people that miss their old house, that want this old feeling back.\u201d <\/p>\n
