{"id":85457,"date":"2025-07-23T08:27:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T08:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/85457\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T08:27:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T08:27:10","slug":"he-is-the-only-player-jannik-sinner-has-won-a-doubles-title-with-but-hes-since-called-for-it-to-be-completely-removed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/85457\/","title":{"rendered":"He is the only player Jannik Sinner has won a doubles title with but he&#8217;s since called for it to be completely removed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Jannik Sinner is now known for dominating the singles court, but he has also shown himself as a more than competent doubles player.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/jannik-sinner-sends-thank-you-message-to-carlos-alcaraz-on-social-media-a-day-after-winning-wimbledon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinner won the Wimbledon singles title<\/a> at his last tournament, beating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> in the final to lift his fourth major title.<\/p>\n<p>After continuing his dominance on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP Tour<\/a>, it was suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/sam-querrey-and-john-isner-agree-who-would-win-if-jannik-sinner-faced-the-wimbledon-doubles-champions-in-a-match\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinner could even beat the Wimbledon doubles champions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/emma-navarro-jokes-why-she-is-getting-worried-about-jannik-sinner-ahead-of-playing-with-him-at-the-us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinner is set to play alongside Emma Navarro at the US Open<\/a>, where he will be hoping to showcase the same skills that helped him win his only doubles title to date.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-1234388118-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Jannik Sinner of Italy and Reilly Opelka of the United States pose for photos with the winners trophy after the pair won the doubles final match against Steve Johnson of the United States and Jordan Thompson of Australia at the Truist Atlanta Open at Atlantic Station.\" \/>Photo by Casey Sykes\/Getty ImagesReilly Opelka is the only player Jannik Sinner has won an ATP doubles title with<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, a 19-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/what-novak-djokovic-told-jannik-sinner-he-needed-to-improve-after-their-first-ever-match-together-in-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinner was already an exciting young prospect<\/a>, who had already reached a career-high ranking of world number 17.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian would begin his North American hard court swing that year as the second seed in the singles draw at the Atlanta Open.<\/p>\n<p>However, things did not go to plan, with Sinner losing his only match in the singles draw to Christopher O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n<p>This would mean that Sinner had actually lost four singles matches in a row, but all hope was not lost as he was also entered into the doubles draw with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/taylor-fritz-picks-the-two-best-servers-he-has-ever-come-up-against-on-the-atp-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">big-serving Reilly Opelka<\/a>, who is 6\u201911\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time that Sinner and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/reilly-opelka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opelka<\/a> had ever played doubles together, and the combination appeared to work perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner and Opelka would beat the second seeds in their opening match, before reaching the Atlanta Open doubles final without dropping a single set.<\/p>\n<p>The final was their most tightly contested match, but Sinner and Opelka would overcome the duo of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/steve-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Johnson<\/a> and Jordan Thompson to win the Atlanta Open doubles title in a match tie-break.<\/p>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Atlanta Open 2021<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Jannik Sinner &amp; Jordan Thompson, 6-4 6(6)-7 [10-3]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<p>Not only would this be a great victory for Opelka and the Italian teenager at the time, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/features\/the-all-time-tennis-record-jannik-sinner-set-at-the-washington-open-in-2021-which-carlos-alcaraz-then-beat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinner would then win the Washington Open<\/a> at his next singles tournament.<\/p>\n<p>This is the only time they have ever played doubles together, and Opelka\u2019s views on the topic appear to have changed dramatically in the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>What controversial things has Reilly Opelka said about doubles since then?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/bob-bryan-reacts-to-reilly-opelkas-comments-on-doubles-and-says-what-he-thinks-about-him-after-playing-with-him-at-davis-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opelka has taken a very different stance on doubles since then<\/a>, all starting with a reply he made on an Instagram post.<\/p>\n<p>After his compatriot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/taylor-fritz-slammed-for-being-selfish-and-greedy-after-admitting-that-he-wants-to-play-another-us-open-event-this-year-following-schedule-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor Fritz showed interest in the US Open mixed doubles event<\/a>, Opelka sarcastically claimed it was \u2018disrespectful towards doubles specialists\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, the American later confirmed what he really meant in another message where he said, \u201cI was being sarcastic they should 100% get rid of dubs. It\u2019s for failed singles players, there\u2019s no such thing as a \u2018doubles specialist\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t sell a single ticket, they take up practice courts\/physios\/resources, they don\u2019t turn a profit, they complain that they don\u2019t make enough $$. That\u2019s pretty greedy behaviour if you ask me.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThey should 100% get rid of dubs.
