{"id":855137,"date":"2026-06-09T13:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T13:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/855137\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T13:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T13:22:14","slug":"nasa-will-announce-new-artemis-iii-astronauts-and-an-update-on-its-moon-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/855137\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Will Announce New Artemis III Astronauts and an Update on Its Moon Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/science\/nasa-artemis-ii-astronauts-moon-joy.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon joy<\/a> continues \u2026 sort of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, NASA plans to announce the four astronauts who will make up the crew of Artemis III, the next mission in the agency\u2019s program to return humans to the surface of the moon. But what should have been a celebratory event now comes in the wake of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/28\/science\/blue-origin-explosion-rocket.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explosion of New Glenn<\/a>, a rocket built by the Jeff Bezos-owned space company Blue Origin. That failure caused damages that could push back the launch of Artemis III, or rule out Blue Origin\u2019s participation in the mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Jared Isaacman, the NASA administrator, said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nasaadmin\/status\/2062665288814829633\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">a social media post<\/a> that the agency would be providing a much-anticipated \u201cconfidence update\u201d on Artemis III during the crew announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Artemis III is the third mission in NASA\u2019s Artemis program, which aims to land humans on the moon in 2028. But the newly minted crew, which NASA will reveal at Johnson Space Center in Houston during an event at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, won\u2019t actually go to the moon. Instead, NASA plans to send them to low-Earth orbit by mid-2027 to test the ability of its spacecraft to rendezvous and dock with one or two lunar landers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Those landers are being developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX, a rocket company founded by Elon Musk. The landers are expected to transfer astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the moon during the Artemis IV and V missions. NASA planned to test parts of this procedure during Artemis III.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The New Glenn rocket is supposed to carry Blue Origin\u2019s lander to space. But the rocket blew up during a test fire at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on May 28. That explosion damaged the only launchpad Blue Origin has available to fly New Glenn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2026\/06\/how-long-will-it-take-to-rebuild-blue-origins-launch-pad-we-asked-some-spacex-vets\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Experts say<\/a> repairs could take months, if not longer. That\u2019s a problem for the accelerated timeline NASA is aiming for with the Artemis program: If New Glenn has nowhere to launch from by the time Artemis III is ready to fly, the mission might need to be delayed. Or the agency might choose to test maneuvers solely with SpaceX\u2019s lunar lander, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/21\/science\/space\/spacex-starship-launch-nasa.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">though that company has experienced its own setbacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIf anyone can do it, they can,\u201d said Casey Dreier, the chief of space policy at the Planetary Society, referring to SpaceX and its ability to be ready for the Artemis III mission in 2027. But, Mr. Dreier added, the company will \u201chave to demonstrate a lot of capabilities that haven\u2019t yet been attempted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Two days before the New Glenn explosion, NASA announced that it had tapped Blue Origin to use the rocket to send rovers to the moon as soon as 2028. An earlier version of Blue Origin\u2019s lunar lander was also scheduled to launch on New Glenn later this year to send scientific instruments to the moon that would help lower the risk in future crewed landings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">NASA is working with Blue Origin to assess the cause of the rocket failure and recover the launchpad. \u201cWe will fly again before the end of this year,\u201d Dave Limp, the chief executive of Blue Origin, wrote in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/davill\/status\/2061655383610114124\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">a social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Historical precedent suggests that it might take longer. In 2016, a SpaceX rocket exploded on a launchpad at Cape Canaveral; afterward, flights from that launchpad did not occur for nearly 16 months. A rocket flown by Orbital Sciences, now part of Northrop Grumman, exploded shortly after liftoff from a NASA facility in 2014, and it took nearly two years for that launchpad to be used again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s really hard to imagine them being back up in the air by the end of 2026, but anything is possible,\u201d said Kathleen Curlee, a space research analyst at Georgetown University, referring to Blue Origin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Artemis III was originally set to launch in 2028 and be the first NASA mission to land humans on the lunar surface in more than 50 years. But in February, the space agency <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/27\/science\/nasa-moon-landings-artemis-schedule.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced that the mission would be moved<\/a> to next year, and serve as a test flight before two lunar landing attempts in 2028. The shift makes Artemis III a simpler, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/science\/nasa-artemis-ii-moon-astronauts-safety.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">less risky<\/a> mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Still, the accelerated timeline leaves the Artemis III crew with no more than a year to bond and prepare for a somewhat undefined mission, if NASA meets its goal of launching the astronauts by mid-2027. (The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/news-event\/artemis-ii\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II<\/a> astronauts, who in April completed a 10-day journey around the moon, underwent three years of training.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">NASA\u2019s process for selecting astronauts to fly on Artemis missions is secret. There are currently 37 active astronauts eligible for flight assignment. Three of them \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/science\/space\/reid-wiseman-artemis-ii-commander.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reid Wiseman<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/science\/victor-glover-artemis-ii-first-black-astronaut-moon.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Glover<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/science\/space\/christina-koch-artemis-ii-astronaut-moon.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Koch<\/a> \u2014 already flew on Artemis II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">NASA <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250314050655\/https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/artemis\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">once committed<\/a> to land the first woman, the first person of color and the first non-American astronaut on the lunar surface, and Artemis II was a step in that direction. Mr. Glover was the first Black man to visit the vicinity of the moon, and Ms. Koch became the first woman. Jeremy Hansen, the fourth Artemis II crew member, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/science\/space\/jeremy-hansen-artemis-ii-astronaut-canada.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the first Canadian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But those astronauts were chosen in 2023, well before the second Trump administration took office and initiated a federal crackdown on diversity, equity and inclusion. Weeks after President Trump\u2019s sweeping D.E.I. ban in 2025, NASA removed language from its website that pledged to land a diverse set of astronauts on the moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Tuesday\u2019s announcement will reveal if Artemis III\u2019s crew <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/03\/science\/nasa-artemis-ii-moon.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will reflect as broad a swath of society as the last one did<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The moon joy continues \u2026 sort of.
